Webster's Dictionary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon Webster's death in 1843, the unsold books and all rights to the copyright and name "Webster" were purchased by brothers George and Charles Merriam, who then hired Webster's son-in-law Chauncey A. Goodrich, a professor at Yale College, to oversee revisions.
Noah Webster's main competitor was Joseph Worcester, whose 1830 Comprehensive Pronouncing and Explanatory Dictionary of the English Language brought accusations of plagiarism from Webster.
Webster's Dictionary is a common title given to English language dictionaries in the United States, deriving its name from American lexicographer Noah Webster.

Merriam-Webster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merriam-Webster, originally known as the G. and C. Merriam Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, is a United States company that publishes reference books, especially dictionaries that are descendants of Noah Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828).
In 1843, after Webster's death, George and Charles Merriam secured publishing and revision rights to the 1840 edition of the dictionary.
Merriam overhauled the dictionary again with the 1961 "Webster's Third New International" under the direction of Philip B. Gove, making changes which sparked public controversy.

 Webster, Noah on Encyclopedia.com
Webster wrote scholarly studies on a great diversity of subjects, including epidemic diseases, mythology, meteors, and the relationship of European and Asian languages.
The difficulty of copyrighting his works in 13 states led Webster to agitate for many years for a national copyright law; it was passed in 1790.
Webster completed the revision of 1840, and the dictionary, revised many times, has retained its popularity.

 AOL/Merriam-Webster Thesaurus Anti-Gay Slurs
Washington, DC - It was discovered today that G. and C. Merriam Company, the parent of thesaurus/dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster, launched a review of "offensive" words in its publications last March, 1998.
The review, sparked by widespread outrage over the inclusion of the word "nigger" in Merriam-Webster's dictionary, was to include anti-gay slurs such as "queer" and "fairy," according to a March 26, 1998 article in the Windy City Times.
When asked whether removal of the anti-gay synonyms could constitute censorship, Aravosis responded: "AOL and Merriam-Webster clearly made a decision not to include slurs against other minorities in their online thesaurus." Searches for the words "black" and "Jew" did not return any ethnic slurs.

 »»Reviews for Reference««
Merriam Webster's has some photos and drawings scattered throughout the text; Benet's does not.
For example, Benet's does not have an entry for The Name of the Rose, I Sing the Body Electric, Love in the Time of Cholera, For the Union Dead, or many other titles found in Merriam Webster.
However, my personal favorite is the Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature, a joint effort of Merriam Webster and Encyclopedia of Britannica.

Amazon.com: The Merriam Webster Dictionary (Merriam-Webster Dictionary): Books: Merriam Webster
Merriam and Webster use a kind of stop-and-go, highly punctuated style of writing that makes the reader stop and think about each element and its place in the work as a whole.
I don't want to spoil the plot, but Merriam and Webster have done some amazing things with explaining words using other words, and also with incorporating every known word in the english language in the style of past dictionarial masters.
Some things about the book are mildly confusing, such as the fact that new characters are introduced at the rate of 30-50 per page, all the way through the book.

 Websters Dictionary
The 1998 10th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary marks the 100th anniversary of this distinguished and popular reference standard, and this is more than just an interesting statistic--it means that Merriam-Webster brings years of experience and reams of citation files to the creation of this latest edition.
Improving on their last dictionary, they've added more than 100 pictorial illustrations and supplemented the synonym paragraphs with examples.
All this makes it a valuable reference--detailed enough for editors and writers, accessible enough for students and casual definition seekers, updated with the new vocabulary of technology, and rigorous enough for the linguistic perfectionists.
