The ''Merrie Melodies'' series was taken on by Rudy Ising, one of the two animators (the other being Hugh Harman) who had worked on the original ''Looney_Tunes'' short.
Ising attempted to introduce new characters in his ''Merrie Melodies'' films, such as Piggy, Foxy, and Goopy_Geer, but Foxy was so derivative of Mickey_Mouse that he was dropped, possibly at Disney's urging.
Contractually, ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoons were obliged to include at least one full chorus from a Warner Bros. song.

In 1934, Schlesinger produced his first color cartoons, the Merrie Melodies shorts "Honeymoon Hotel" and "Beauty and the Beast" which were produced in Cinecolor (Disney had exclusive rights to the richer Technicolor).
Warner Bros. continued their fondness for paying themselves for music performance rights, however, as shown by the frequent repetition of "The Merrie Go Round Broke Down" and "Singing in the Bathtub", and the music of Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott, particularly "Powerhouse".

The Straight Dope: What's the difference between a Looney Tune and a Merrie Melody?
My initial idea was to tell you that Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies reflected the dichotomy between the Apollonian and Dionysian impulses or, if you will, the classical and romantic modes of creative expression.
While there were differences between Tunes and Melodies, the main reason for having two separate series was that's the way they'd structured the deal.
Merrie Melodies also featured Warner songs, but where Tunes had regular characters, Melodies for the most part were one-shots, without continuing characters.

Foxy is an animated cartoon character featured in the Merrie Melodies series of films distributed by Warner Bros. The character is a fl fox with teardrop-shaped ears and a bushy tail.
Animator Rudolf Ising created Foxy as the star of the new Merrie Melodies series he was directing for producer Leon Schlesinger (Ising had already helped his partner Hugh Harman create another series, entitled Looney Tunes).
Foxy was the most unabashedly unoriginal of the various Mickey Mouse duplicates so prevalent in the 1930s, a fact that didn't escape the notice of Walt Disney.

Piggy is an animated cartoon character in the Merrie Melodies series of films distributed by Warner Bros. The character is a fat, fl pig who wears a pair of shorts with buttons on the front.
Due to its stereotypical portrayal of the Uncle Tom character, the cartoon is included among the so-called "Censored 11", Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts that are withheld from circulation due to their heavy use of ethnic stereotypes.
Unlike his fellow early Merrie Melodies alumni Foxy, Roxy and Goopy Geer, Piggy was conspicuously absent from the "Two-Tone Town" episode of the animated series Tiny Toon Adventures in 1992.

The Warner Brothers cartoon folks arbitrarily designated half their films as "Looney Tunes" and the other half as "Merrie Melodies," using the titles interchangeably.
Apart from that, the other main difference was that in 1934, they began to make the Merrie Melodies shorts in color, whereas the Looney Tunes series remained fl-and-white until 1943.

Since 1936, when the concentric circles (called "rings" for convenience) opening was introduced on Merrie Melodies, the first color used was blue because of the advent of blue hues in the new 3-color Technicolor process opened up to Disney's competitors that year.
I Wanna Play House was the first Merrie Melodies with rings, while a later film (not known due to Blue Ribbon reissue policy) introduced the zooming WB shield (a device borrowed from WB's live-action films) used on virtually every WB cartoon hence.
Below appear all possible ring color combinations for Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes (where applicable), starting with the first use of these titles in 1936.
