Merrill C. Meigs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merrill C. Meigs (November 25, 1883 - January 26, 1968) was the publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner in the 1920s.
Meigs (pronunciation: "Megz" - rhymes with "eggs") grew up on a farm near Malcom, Illinois, where he was more interested in the mechanical devices used to raise crops than actually farming.
Meigs retired in 1962 and became a consultant to the newspaper industry.

Meigs Field - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport [previously (IATA: CGX, ICAO: KCGX)] was a single strip airport built on Northerly Island, the man-made island originally created to house the 1933-1934 Century of Progress in Chicago, Illinois.
The airfield was named for Merrill C. Meigs, publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner and an aviation booster.
The runway at Meigs Feld was nearly 3,900 feet (1,200 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) wide.

 Merrill C. Meigs
Merrill C. Meigs was one of those rare people with both a clear view of what the future should be and a force of will that helped create the present we now take for granted.
Meigs was struck by a vision, nearly fully formed, on the golf course at Midlothian Country Club in May of 1927.
Meigs grew up on the family farm near Malcom far more interested in the mechanical equipment needed to produce crops than he was in the crops themselves.

 Meigs Field
Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport (IATA airport code CGX) was a single strip airport built on Northerly Island, the landfill originally created to house the 1932 Century of Progress in Chicago, Illinois.
As of April 2003, several groups lead by the Friends of Meigs Field[?] were beginning another court battle to have the airport re-opened.
However, as of June 2003, the conversion to a lakefront park was fully underway, and it was highly unlikely the airport would ever be re-opened.

NBAA BAAAP > Merrill C. Meigs Field (CGX), Chicago, IL
Despite years of efforts to preserve Chicago's Merrill C. Meigs Field (CGX) by NBAA and other organizations such as the Friends of Meigs, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's mandate to replace Meigs with a park came closer to fruition last week as demolition of the airport resumed.
Since that time, the Friends of Meigs Field and several other plaintiffs sued the City of Chicago, the Chicago Park District and Mayor Daley and were granted temporary restraining orders, the second of which was dissolved by an appeals court on May 30.
The Friends of Meigs also attempted to influence the Illinois legislature in a session at the end of May by attaching an amendment to reopen Meigs to a bill concerning O’Hare International Airport, but ultimately did not succeed.

Docket No. 90585, City of Chicago v. Holland (Il. S. Ct.)
Meigs Field, the City's third airport, is paid for by the City and included within the City's budget.
Because of the reduction and eventual elimination of state funding for the City's airports, an audit of those airports, which is limited by statute and by the constitution to public funds of the state, would necessarily be limited in scope.
Because the operating budget of Meigs is small in comparison with the other two airports, it is accounted for within the City's general corporate fund budget.

 Eric Zorn
Seven years ago, when Meigs was padlocked as part of some gambit in the Chicago-Springfield chess match, I proposed a compromise use of the land: turn the runways into fairways and build a 3,500-yard, 9-hole golf course on the site.
And he ordered the demolition done under cover of night in order to be sure that the Friends of Meigs Field and others who want to keep the airport open wouldn't have the effrontery, the brass, the gall to take advantage of our society's dispute-resolution mechanism and go to court to try to block it.
Rachel Goodstein, president of the Friends of Meigs Field, said late Monday that her group and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association are exploring possible legal action to undo Daley's destruction.

A notice at the end of the ATIS said, "A reminder, at 10PM local time tonight Meigs Airport will close forever." The last three words were intoned with a deep voice.
About 10:30 someone called inbound for landing with (surprise!) "negative ATIS." Meigs said, "unable, Meigs airport closed *permanently*." Apparently airplanes were so reluctant to leave that the controller agreed to squeeze in more low approaches at this point, even after earlier requests after 10PM were denied.

Instead of an "Open House," FOM promoted the event as "The Great Chicago Meigs Airlift," held at the Burnham Park Yacht Club, which is adjacent to beleaguered Merrill C. Meigs Field.
Steve Whitney, President of the Friends of Meigs, noted that there are now more than 6,000 dues-paying FOM members located in all 50 states, seven countries and four continents.
In an aviation context, this is a no-brainer: An airplane landing at Meigs is not landing at Midway or O’Hare." Whitney added that support for Meigs is high at the state level, but that action may be difficult politically to get before the legislature, which is controlled by democrats.
