Merrily We Roll Along - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merrily We Roll Along is a play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and a musical loosely based on it by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth.
The musical Merrily We Roll Along had a troubled preview period, marred by several critical reviews published prior to the official Broadway opening on November 16, 1981.
For a legendary "flop" show, Merrily We Roll Along has the unusual distinction of having three cast recordings: the original Broadway cast, York Theatre cast, and Leicester Haymarket cast recordings are all available on CD.

Merrily We Roll Along has come full circle, revealing itself as a provocative modern-day musical of enormous strength, intricate theatricality, and—in Sondheim's soaring melodies—great beauty.

Ken Mandelbaum postulates that one of the reasons Merrily flopped was that the cast was too inexperienced to carry a whole musical, and while that may well have been the case during the book scenes, you wouldn't believe it from their performances on the CD.
The main criticism I have is that the history of Merrily omits the critical reaction and the subsequent embracing of this score by Sondheim fans.

Merrily tells the story of three friends—Franklin Shepard, Charlie Kringas, and Mary Flynn—fresh out of college, who are looking to conquer the world: Franklin and Charlie are an up-and-coming composer-lyricist team, and Mary is a budding novelist.
We follow their almost 20-year friendship, from 1957 to 1976, through a host of trials and tribulations including early success, divorce, betrayal, alcoholism, and artistic corruption before the trio winds up estranged from one another.
Merrily begins in 1976, at the end of the threesome’s friendship, and journeys backwards in time, retracing the steps that led them to that point.

Like "Company," "Merrily We Roll Along" is a modest-sized show that crackles with the wit, humor and intensity that embody the spirit of New York City.
With a brilliant "Broadway-style" score and that deep insight one expects from any Sondheim endeavor, "Merrily We Roll Along" is a spirited and moving cautionary tale for anyone who has ever pursued a dream.

And if Merrily We Roll Along lacks the splendor of some of his more justly famous musical theater works (like Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd), it's still got enough of that trademark Sondheim edge to provide a fine evening's entertainment.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Of the five "Merrilys" I have seen (semi-staged concert perfs included) over the last two decades, this isn't necessarily the best-sung or the best-accented -- these are Brits (with one exception) playing Yanks -- and some of the cruder choreographic passages trivialize the blithe exuberance of kids cutting loose.
Meanwhile, the shadings within "Merrily" itself are abundantly there for the taking, notwithstanding dances from Peter Darling (of "Billy Elliot""Billy Elliot" renown) that make a fetish of circular movement while rarely freeing up the performers.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Merrily We Roll Along
Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along is a musical without a happy ending.
The play’s unconventional structure allows the plot to unfold backwards and, therefore, when one sees the idealistic characters at the end of the evening, she can only think with sadness upon how they betrayed their ideals, rolling along through life, merrily forgetting the friendship and values that were once so important to them.
As the play unfolds, she turns back from a past-her-prime star to a dangerous sexpot, and Karlin is always on the right, albeit detestable, note.

The odds are against them because "Merrily," like the 1934 Kaufman and Hart play it's based upon, thumbs its nose at emotional logic by starting at the end of a story and working back through time to the beginning.
"Merrily" is the story of composer Franklin Shepard (Malcolm Gets), playwright/lyricist Charley Kringas (Adam Heller) and novelist Mary Flynn (Amy Ryder), whose friendship begins in college in 1957 and intensifies during the ' 60s as they achieve varying degrees of success.
The relationships begin degenerating by the decade's end as Franklin becomes a Hollywood producer and is finally viewed by Charley and Mary as a crass sellout; by 1976, it's all over between them.
