Merseybeat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merseybeat, sometimes referred to as Merseysound, was a style of music popular during the 1960s.
A newspaper called "Merseybeat" was founded and edited by Bill Harry, and it was the first publication to have the Beatles on the cover in journalistic history.
One of the most popular merseybeat bands was called The Merseybeats.

Merseybeat (Beatles pre-Beatles For Sale, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, The Searchers, et al.) has long provided a foundation for bands that promote the essence of rocking pop music.
To celebrate the reissue 11 tracks have been added to the original nine, all of which were recorded 20 years after the ascent of Mersey's first musical incarnations.
By way of comparison, the high church of modern Merseybeat is usually considered in the context of the Spongetones.

Subtitled "The Golden Age 1961-1966", Viper's second compilation of rare Merseybeat sounds focuses on the time when The Beatles ruled the airwaves and anyone with the hint of a Scouse accent was taken seriously in the beat group arena.
Sure, they are often partially obscured by the dirt and grime of the best part of four decades out of the public domain, but with a bit of loving care and buffing up by the Viper boys, their patina again begins to shine through.
They are possibly the absolute Merseybeat enigmas: aside from a fearsome live reputation, sod all is known about them, yet their "Clarabella" is a memorably great rave up.

The Viper Label - UNEARTHED MERSEYBEAT FROM THE BIRTH OF MERSEYBEAT TO PSYCHEDELIA 1957 - 1968
For the first time this album tells the complete story of the birth of Merseybeat, from the beginnings with the impact of skiffle and Rock 'n' Roll (Lonnie Donegan, Buddy Holly, Elvis etc) - influencing a whole generation of musicians - through its heyday, to late 60's psychedelia.
Eventually a new sound emerged dubbed 'Merseybeat' (Like all musical definitions, 'Merseybeat' was a broad term to apply to numerous bands with that unique Liverpool sound).
With The Beatles, 'Merseybeat' was huge and continued to be for a number of years until like every musical fad, it faded.

Such was the devotion of local Liverpool fans to their 'own' sound (and groups) that 100 youths barricaded themselves in the Cavern as a protest against its closure in February 1966.
