A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on seas and lakes.
However, the UK's National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is also a contender, with many items of great historical significance, such as the actual uniform worn by Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
A recent activity of maritime museums is to build replicas of ships, since there are few survivors that have not already been restored and put on display.

Liverpool is governed by Liverpool City Council, one of five councils within the Metropolitan county of Merseyside, and is one of England's core cities and its fifth most populous - 441,477 in 2002, with 1,362,026 in the Merseyside conurbation.
During World War II there were 80 air-raids on Merseyside, killing 2500 people and causing damage to almost half the homes in the metropolitan area.
Part of the old dock complex is now the home to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool Life and the Tate Liverpool.

 Sailing Ships and Maritime History - Through Mighty Seas
The Through Mighty Seas website covers the maritime history of the merchant sailing ships of the North West of England and the Isle of Man, through the period from the late 1700's until the First World War.
The history covers the area from Lancaster to the S of Morecambe Bay, and the Cumbrian coast to the Solway Firth, and includes the Isle of Man. The main content is individual ship histories, but also included is information on shipbuilders, shipyards, lifeboats, sea captains and mariners, shipping lines and other maritime history information.

The early history of H.M.S. Nile, up to the time she became the third replacement 'HMS Conway' on 23rd June 1876, is to be found in some detail in the book.
When she arrived, she brought with her a number of rescued American and British seamen, and several runaway convicts, one of whom had been missing for a number of years and was involved with the taking of the schooner Culedonia."
