Line 1 of Merseytram will be a line from downtown Liverpool in a loop, heading northwesterly to the Royal Liverpool Hospital, Croxteth, and Kirkby.
On December 21, 2004 the Merseytram Line 1 Transport and Works Act application was approved by the Secretary of State.
Line 2 of Merseytram, which could start construction in 2006 for a 2008 opening, will start at the Liverpool City Centre loop and head east to Prescot and the hospital in Whiston via Knotty Ash and Page Moss.

MERSEYTRAM will today turn to Europe to provide a cash lifeline it needs to become a reality.
The project's promoters are hoping Objective 1 money can be used to help plug the gap of more than £30m which is threatening to destroy more than five years of planning.
The interest on such a loan could be up to £2m a year and it is likely this would have to be covered mostly by Liverpool and Knowsley councils, the prime beneficiaries of the tram.

THE Merseytram system will be built by construction group Laing O'Rourke and trams specialist Grant Rail, it was revealed today.
Laing O'Rourke is already based in the city working on several major schemes, such as the waterfront Unity flats and offices development, and the the £ 800 m Paradise Street redevelopment.
A planning application has also been submitted for Merseytram's Gillmoss depot, including 750 park and ride car spaces, he revealed.

It had been widely expected that Merseytravel chief executive Neil Scales would ask for extra Objective 1 funds to plug a gap of more than £30m in the finances of Line One.

Government figures show the Merseytram scheme would generate £1.10 of benefits for every £1 invested, compared to £1.60 for the "Big Bang".

The two remaining bidders for the running of the Merseytram contract are attempting to buy out one of the North West's largest bus operators.
