ANKARA (AFP) - The administration of a Turkish province has declared that a centuries-old tradition of pre-dawn drum-beating to wake Muslims up during the holy month of Ramadan is a breach of human rights and should be abandoned.
The Human Rights Board at the office of the governor of the southern Mersin province -- comprised of the governor, other senior local officials and civic groups -- said that drum-beating in the early hours of the day was disturbing for children as well as sick and working people.
The province's top Muslim cleric has lent support to the move, saying that drum-beating is not a condition set by Islam, the Radikal daily reported.

In the most recent incident, a bomb blast blamed on the PKK killed five soldiers in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Friday, prompting a pledge by the army to clamp down on the rebels.

Turkish newspapers yesterday wrote about the number of rural schools that are closed; an interview with the head of the Turkish Central Bank; protests in southern Mersin province; the double standards of two European countries; and juvenile delinquents.
The number attending schools in rural areas is decreasing as a result of families moving to urban areas, and as a consequence schools are being closed one by one.
The newspaper listed the provinces in which schools are now closed: 80 are closed in Bayburt, 80 in Tunceli, 42 in Bitlis, 44 in Kars, nine in Elazığ, two in Iğdır and one in Muş.

Ankara, Nov 23 - Nine people were killed and 18 others injured on Wednesday as a passenger train crashed into a vehicle carrying workers in the southern Turkish province of Mersin, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
The report said the train was en route from another southern province of Adana to Mersin when it collided with a lorry in Tarsus town in Mersin.
Nine people died at the spot and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, the report added.
