Mervyns' new stores have nine-foot-wide aisles, up to 50 percent wider than at the older stores, and have central checkout lanes near the front entrances.
Mervyns lost money for each of the last three years under Target's ownership, and some industry observers said the chain foundered because rapidly growing Target invested too little money and attention on it.
