Merv Hughes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hughes' physical presence (he was a burly 6'4"), walrus moustache, his penchant for exuberant displays of affection for his fellow players (they called him "Fruitfly"), and a mincing run-up that stretched at times to 45 paces, all helped make him a firm favourite amongst spectators.
Hughes replaced Allan Border in June 2005 as a selector for the Australian cricket team.
Hughes is a prominent supporter of the Western Bulldogs Australian Football League team.

Indian top six is the best: Hughes
Hughes, who terrorised batsmen with his mix of aggressive bowling and ample sledging, said the Australians chose the wrong decks to test out the Indians' technique in the first two Tests.
Hughes admitted Australia are missing Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, but said it should not be forgotten that India also missed Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh, and Tendulkar did not contribute in the first two Tests.
Hughes said the Aussies must wake up to the fact that there are teams that play their own way, which could be different to Australia's methods and still successful.

Mervyn Gregory Hughes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Hughes made a comparatively modest entrance to Test cricket in the mid-1980s, but his value came to the fore against the West Indies in 1988-89, when he lost pace partner Geoff Lawson to a broken jaw in the Second Test.
Hughes gained a hat-trick that match but, perhaps more significantly, his performance (13/217 off 73.1 overs) illustrated his ability to combine the roles of spearhead and stock bowler.
By the mid-point of his international career, Hughes had improved his accuracy and variation and was using his bouncer (which remained a favourite throughout his career) with greater discretion.

Cricinfo - Merv Hughes - master of playing by ear (28 November 1998)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Hughes led the earborne assault troops with more relish than anyone - and there were times when he got so close to deliver his invective that England's batsmen were in danger of coming down with moustache rash.
Hughes many times illustrated the difference in approach which has emphasised the gulf between the teams in recent years, not least by turning himself from a hopeless batsman (his first three Test scores were 0, 0 and 0) into someone who took 71 off the English attack in the first Test at Headingley in 1989.
Hughes might have had a stomach like Pavarotti, but his heart was the size of Ayers Rock, and it was his lung-bursting chase after a ball in what appeared to be a lost cause which led to Atherton being run out for 99 in the Lord's Test of 1993.
