King's elevation has prompted speculation as to whether he will abandon the consensual approach and instead attempt to dominate the committee in the way that Alan Greenspan calls the shots at the Fed. This seems unlikely.
King is a man of strong opinions, and there are fewer rival academic economists to challenge the governor's economic theory on the committee than there were when it was first established, but it still contains strong-minded individuals with experience in the way monetary policy impacts on labour markets, finance and industry.
King, who was opposed to the idea, will receive short shrift if he seeks to go back on the agreement made by his predecessor.
