Mervyn Wall and Darrell Figgis: The Fursey Novels and The Return of the Hero
Among the authors discussed are James Joyce, Flann O'Brien, Mervyn Wall, Darrell Figgis, Eimar O'Duffy, and James Stephens.
From the sophisticated satire of Joyce, as found in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, to the tragicomedies of Mervyn Wall's Fursey novels, the intrusion of medieval Irish sources remains constant, suggesting a certain homogeneity in the novels' offerings of escape from reality through a world that belongs, in part, to folklore.

The purchase of Mervyn's was a mistake, and the purchase of Marshall Field's, and then changing Dayton's to Marshall Field's, was a victory for hope over reality.
It's baffling why Mervyn's has continued to be a laggard, even as Kohl's business has exploded (I always think of Mervyn's as the original Kohl's).
Target's sale of Marshall Field's and Mervyn's is a good move since their financial resources can produce higher returns in Target stores, and the Target culture already reflects and is advantaged by its department store heritage.

The Unfortunate Fursey   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Mervyn Wall, however, not only goes for the Horatian rather than Juvenalian satire, he can also be fairly credited as having more gentle to his subject that it really deserves.
It’s pretty easy to excoriate Catholics for its medieval sins such as ecclesiasts violating their vows and giving in to superstitions, but Wall goes easy on them and even puts forth an evenhanded (from the POV present) character in inquisitor Father Furiosus.
Fursey transforms from wide-eyed innocent to wily fugitive, and while his innocence only gets him punishment, his worldliness allows him to grab everything he wants.

RTÉ Libraries and Archives: preserving a unique record of Irish life.
Henry Street had been the main centre for radio broadcasting in Ireland since 1929.
At the time of the move to Montrose, Mervyn Wall commented that "staff were very attached to their premises in the GPO...radio operated from two long corridors and some additional rooms never built or intended for broadcasting...it was heartbreaking to be running a broadcasting service from a building never intended for the purpose...".
An even less charitable view of the Henry Street 'corridor' had been taken by the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who told a reporter that "it looks like a public convenience".

 Robert Hogan : 1930-1999
Hogan himself contributed very many entries and a striking historical and critical Introduction; and while some of the short newer notices were dismissive of writers who later achieved distinction (such as Sebastian Barry), the book continues to provide essential guidance on the whole range of Irish writings in its enlarged two-volume edition of 1996.
Monographs on Arthur Miller (1964), Mervyn Wall (1972) and Eimar O'Duffy (1972) as well as innumerable articles and essays in Irish and other journals of literary scholarship complete an astounding curriculum vitae.
All of this amounts to an extraordinary contribution to Irish literary studies, driven by a passion for the subject and by a degree of literary patriotism that Bob Hogan's unfailing good manners and easy nature sometimes belied.

Mervyn Wall operates as a sometimes unwitting commentator on Irish hero tales, via comic irony and inverted motifs, while Darrell Figgis recalls the passing of Celtic heroic traditions in his bitter satire of Saint Patrick and Oisín's legendary dispute, in The Return of the Hero.
Eimar O'Duffy's satire of modern Ireland mourns the end of Celtic heroic values in a fantasy that is overwhelmingly pessimistic in tone, while James Stephens extols the virtues of the imagination in The Crock of Gold and The Demi-Gods.

Mikhail Bakhtin defines Menippean satire as an unresolved dialogue between actual and/or implied voices designed to test a truth or philosophical idea.
