The mescal drinker remains calm and collected amid the sensory turmoil around him; his judgment is as clear as in the normal state; he falls into no oriental condition of vague and voluptuous reverie.
The reason why mescal is of all this class of drugs the most purely intellectual in its appeal is evidently because it affects mainly the most intellectual of the senses.

It was the Apache's dependence upon the mescal plant, better known as the familiar spiked-leafed agave or century plant, for food which led the early Spanish explorers to call these people the "mescal makers" or Mescaleros.
The roasted mescal was sun dried and used in much the same manner as the Plains Indians used dried meat or jerky.
The mescal is then placed in the pit, which is covered with damp gramma grass and three feet of soil to seal in the heat and moisture for the four day cooking process.

CSP - 'Mescal and the Mechanisms of Hallucination' by Heinrich Kluver
Some subjects refer to "cosmic consciousness" and to ecstatic states in which "our exclamations of joy become involuntary." A few records indicate that mescal may cause fear and "horrible depressions"; one of the subjects of Prentiss and Morgan felt "that his life was leaving him."...
The fact that one subject experiences a fretwork design as a phenomenon to be explained by certain findings in sensory psychology, and that another subject considers it not only of cosmic significance, but as the cosmos itself, is certainly an interesting contribution to the individual psychology of these subjects.

 Sierra Vista Herald: News
BISBEE -- Mescal residents seeking fire protection for their area received the Cochise County Board of Supervisors' approval Tuesday to begin the petition process to turn their fledgling volunteer fire department into a state-recognized fire district.
The problem, Cokely said, is that the fire department serves about 1,000 households in the area, far fewer than it receives dues from, and is therefore understaffed and lacking in the resources to adequately fight fires in the area.
Because the majority of the property and residents of the proposed district live in Cochise County, the county government was required to agree to the petition process before district advocates, which are primarily comprised of current volunteer firefighters, could continue with the formation of the district.
