Topic: Mesembryanthemums

  biogeography of lithops
Some botanists do not consider Mesembryanthemum to be its own family and include it as a subgroup of the family Aizoaceae (Klak 1997).
Mesembryanthemums were once part (and are sometimes still included) in the family Aizoaceae.
Mesembryanthemum was one of five subfamilies of Aizoaceae that split away based upon differences in the number of chromosomes and the structure of petals (Klak 1997).

A Layman's Guide to Mimicry Mesembryanthemums - Ottawa and Area Cactus and Succulent Group - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Mimicry Mesembryanthemums is a rather loose term used to describe a group of South African succulent plants of a number of different genera (a botanical term for a group of plants based on them having similar types of flowers and other basic characteristics) in the family Aizoaceae.
The term Mimicry Mesembryanthemums, or Mimicry Mesembs for anyone like me who finds that a bit of a mouthful, is used because in general these plants tend to resemble, both in shape and colour, the stones and pebbles of the rocky deserts of their natural homes.
During the resting period young plant bodies are formed within the old, which dries to a papery insulating skin which protects the new plants from the fierce heat of the sun.

On the sandy flats between the road and the sea were myriads of small flowers: oxalis of most dazzling pink; yellow, white, and lilac heaths, bulbs of endless variety, gazanias, and different mesembryanthemums.
Mesembryanthemums, portulacas, ixias and babianas were also in great quantities, and of every possible tint.
The large mesembryanthemums were gorgeous, coming out pure white or yellow, but turning pink and lilac before they shrivelled up.

The landscape was uninviting; the hills, destitute of trees, were of a dark brown color, and the scanty vegetation on the plains made me feel that they deserved the name of Desert more than the Kalahari.
When first taken possession of, these parts are said to have been covered with a coating of grass, but that has disappeared with the antelopes which fed upon it, and a crop of mesembryanthemums and crassulas occupies its place.
But even this contingency was foreseen by the Omniscient One; for, as we may now observe in the Kalahari Desert, another family of plants, the mesembryanthemums, stood ready to neutralize the aridity which must otherwise have followed.
