	Mesen (Municipality, Province of West Flanders, Belgium)
		Accordingly, Mesen is a Dutch-speaking municipality with "facilities" for the French-speaking population.
		Mesen is located only 6 kms of the border with France, between Armentières (France) and Ieper (Belgium).
		The municipal flag of Mesen, a blue flag with a white fleur-de-lys, was approved by Ministerial decree on 6 June 1989.

	Mesen: The Battle for Messines Ridge 7 June 1917
		The small village of Mesen as it is now called is in fact officially designated a City.
		Perhaps Mesen's most famous soldier during the period 1914 to 1916 would have been a volunteer in the German Army with artistic leanings: Adolf Hitler.
		Rising to about 80 metres, the Mesen ridge is not spectacular like Mont Kemmel, but in an area where the average height of the terrain is about 45 metres, possession of the hill gave the Germans a wonderful position from which to observe everything that the British did.

		Maar tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog had het koninklijk gesticht in Mesen een te grote schade geleden zodat de restauratie van hun gebouw een onbegonnen werk was.
		Uiteindelijk evolueerde Het Koninklijk Gesticht van Mesen tot een gewone onderwijsvorm en bij Koninklijk besluit van 10 aug 1952 werd het onder voogdij geplaatst van de minister van onderwijs.
		Een hele tijd bleef deze situatie ongewijzigd tot er in 1970 een grondige herstructurering werd doorgevoerd.

		Following the severe bombardment of the strategic Mesen Ridge, he was walking through the rubble of what once had been St Nicholas' Church when he noticed some coloured cloth among the stones.
		Alan Brannagan had been serving as a pastor with the War Graves Commission and knew Mesen and he was told the story of the embroidery.
		Albert Ghekiere was keen to have the embroidery restored to the Church and the Buckley/Holden family was keen to return it.

	Castle of Mesen
		Beware : most floors are made of wood and the place has been rotting for a while.
		The first map showing the Castle of Mesen dates back from 1628, however since centuries it had been a strategic place with a fortress and a castle (which was destroyed in 1581 and rebuild by the end of that century).
		Later owners have used the castle and the land around it as a gin distillery, sugar -and potash refinery, convent and a boarding school.

		We zien oude straatgezichten, de stoomtram, verdwenen herbergen en molens, een houtzagerij, de klassen en speelzaal van het Koninklijk Gesticht, de halfvastenviering van 1903, kinderen op klompen (misschien wel uw grootouders…), enz.
		Wie Mesen een warm hart toedraagt, mag deze uitgave niet missen.
