Mesenchyme - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mesenchyme (also known as embryonic connective tissue) is the mass of tissue that develops mainly from the mesoderm (the middle layer of the trilaminar germ disc) of an embryo.
Viscous in consistency, mesenchyme contains collagen bundles and fibroblasts.
Mesenchyme later differentiates into blood vessels, blood-related organs, and connective tissues.

 Natcell Mesenchyme
Mesenchymal cells develop during the early embryonic stages of mammalian gestation and are the source material from which most of the mammalian body's organs and tissues are made - everything from bones, muscles, and connective tissue to the central nervous system (Moore 1989).
Mesenchymal cells migrate and differentiate in many different ways: they may become fibroblasts (connective tissue cells that manufacture collagen), chondroblasts (a type of differentiated fibroblast that becomes cartilage), or osteoblasts (bone forming cells).
Mesenchyme seems to reawaken the aging cell's ability to respond to the directive of growth factors to divide and grow.

 Mesenchyme Rejuvenating Aging Healer
Mesenchymal cells develop during the early embryonic stages of mammalian gestation and are the source material from which most of the mammalian body's organs and tissues are made - everything from bones, muscles, and connective tissue to the central nervous system.
The use of mesenchyme as a therapeutic substance arises from experiments conducted early in the 20th century by Dr. Alexis Carrel, 1912 Nobel Laureate in Biology, who demonstrated that organic tissues could be regenerated in vitro by the addition of fresh younger cells to the culture medium.
A portion of the mesenchyme remains in the placenta and the yolk sac surrounding the embryo in the fetus.

CiteULike: Independent requirement for ISL1 in formation of pancreatic mesenchyme and islet cells   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The LIM homeodomain protein ISL1 is expressed in all classes of islet cells in the adult and its expression in the embryo is initiated soon after the islet cells have left the cell cycle.
Dorsal pancreatic mesenchyme does not form in ISL1-mutant embryos and there is an associated failure of exocrine cell differentiation in the dorsal but not the ventral pancreas.
These results indicate that ISL1, by virtue of its requirement for the formation of dorsal mesenchyme, is necessary for the development of the dorsal exocrine pancreas, and also that ISL1 function in pancreatic endodermal cells is required for the generation of all endocrine islet cells.

The metanephrogenic mesenchyme causes the ureteric bud to elongate and branch.
The tubes derived from the mesenchyme form the secretory nephrons of the functioning kidney, and the branched ureteric bud gives rise to the renal collecting ducts and to the ureter, which drains the urine from the kidney.
Wnt4 expression is found in the condensing mesenchyme cells, in the S-shaped tubes, and in the region where the newly epithelialized cells fuse with the ureteric bud tips.

FurryKids.net - Information on Mesenchyme   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
What makes mesenchyme so unique, special, and efficient is the fact that it is composed of pleuripotential cells, also known as mesenchymal stem cells, which have the ability to become almost any kind of tissue or organ.
Mesenchyme’s potential to literally become any type of tissue (that pleuripotentiality again) has been described and elucidated in several research studies.
A research group at the University of Cincinnati’s Noyes-Giannestras Biomechanics Laboratories studied mesenchyme’s ability to restore a surgically created defect in a rabbit tendon.2 Mesenchymal cells were implanted into a clinically created defect in the right tendon, and a cell-free collagen gel was implanted into an identical control defect in the left tendon.

It is not a uniform structure as it has gaps which allow the epithelium and the mesenchyme to directly touch each other, though this is not always necessary as diffusible agents exist.

Classical tissue transplant experiments in the chick and recent studies in the mouse indicated that interactions with the cardiogenic mesoderm are necessary and sufficient to induce the liver in the ventral foregut endoderm.
Using molecular markers and functional assays, we now show that septum transversum mesenchyme cells, a distinct mesoderm cell type, are closely apposed to the ventral endoderm and contribute to hepatic induction.
Specifically, using a mouse Bmp4 null mutation and an inhibitor of BMPs, we find that BMP signaling from the septum transversum mesenchyme is necessary to induce liver genes in the endoderm and to exclude a pancreatic fate.
