Meshuggah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meshuggah was formed in Umeå in 1987; two years later, the band released their first record, an EP entitled Psykisk Testbild (which can be roughly translated as "psychological test picture", perhaps in reference to a Rorschach Test image).
Meshuggah is the favorite metal band of Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and Blackfield fame and co-producer of several albums by the Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth.
Meshuggah, whose name is taken from the Hebrew and Yiddish word for "crazy," is a five-piece math metal band from Umeå, Sweden who use extended polymetric passages, complex drum patterns, odd time signatures, angular, dissonant guitar riffs, and harsh, non-pitched vocals.

 Meshuggah?
Most people involved in the genre are aware that Meshuggah have become synonymous with a new, painfully repetitive, but unerringly accurate form of progression in extreme music, that leaves most of even their most technical contempories in the dust.
As the centerpiece of Meshuggah's integral rhythms, not much more need be said, except that for his hard work this was voted one of the top 5 recorded drum performances this year by Modern Drummer readers.
Whilst their previous release, "Nothing", was a brutal, tortuous and extremely uncommercial grind through doom-like soundscapes that disgusted and infuriated as many as it revealed wonders to others, this 21 minute single song EP takes a much different route to the same aim.

That's because, for all of the justified acclaim at having established a wholly unique and instantly recognizable sonic imprint, Meshuggah's recent efforts had started to seem a little tired and repetitive, leading some critics to accuse the band of treading water in a progressive death metal pool of its own creation.
Though they probably never intended it to, Meshuggah's 2004 EP I -- featuring a single 21-minute song -- helped open new possibilities at a crucial career juncture for the long-heralded Swedish originals.
Because Meshuggah is more popular in Europe than America, they are often overlooked in the hardcore scene, but they truly are some of the most talented musicians in the world.

Formed in 1987, Meshuggah has been producing their own version of death metal for about fifteen years now during which time they have produced six albums and three EP’s.
Meshuggah definitely tend to be more chromatic/experimental sounding, while Pantera has a great classic 70's rock/blues feel to their sound (some of their stuff anyway).
Of course, the backbone of Meshuggah’s intricate attack is drummer Tomas Haake who recently sat down to discuss the band’s past, present and future in metal.

Extended play - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meshuggah released a single track 22 minute EP, "I", comprised of a set of sections that could easily be categorised as indivdual tracks or or simply different parts of a very complex song.
For example, EPs are usually released as a promo or as a method for an artist to release a collection of songs unfit for an album.
Using the term EP in such cases would be considered technically incorrect, as they were not "extended", and the term "7 inch" became a standard.

Catch 33 shows a conceptual depth beyond the first 4 LPs but similar to the "I" EP and slightly short of the utter genius of "Sol Niger (Dark Sun) Within" (Thordendal's side project, which is absolutely sublime.) The engineering on Catch 33 also sounds better overall (especially for the car) than other Meshuggah.
Catch Thirty-Three has already drawn some criticism from fans concerned about its departures from Meshuggah's norm, but these people may be missing the point.
Unlike Meshuggah's previous three albums, on which each song was a distinctive, fully-realized classic in its own right, Catch Thirty-Three is essentially one extended mood piece broken up into 13 parts.

That's because, for all of the justified acclaim at having established a wholly unique and instantly recognizable sonic imprint, Meshuggah's recent efforts had started to seem a little tired and repetitive, leading some critics to accuse the band of treading water in a progressive death metal pool of its own creation.
Fair assumption or not, the group wisely decided to replicate and extend that single-song strategy on 2005's appropriately named Catch Thirty-Three; although the reality that its virtually nonstop 47 minutes are in fact broken down into 13 sections could also be viewed as a not so elaborate ruse to disguise just another, typical Meshuggah LP.
Though they probably never intended it to, Meshuggah's 2004 EP I -- featuring a single 21-minute song -- helped open new possibilities at a crucial career juncture for the long-heralded Swedish originals.

I admit, I didn't like this album at first, because I expected this album to pick up where their one-song EP 'I' left off, and felt that this was too slow and repetitive.
This is a very bizarre Meshuggah album, and metal album in general; it flows as one long, continuous song broken down into 13 songs.
"Mind's Mirrors" is the weirdest song on the album, as it starts out with a metal riff that comes to a crashing halt, and then followed up by a robotic vocal style unlike anything I've ever heard before.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - MESHUGGAH - None EP
The musicianship is probably the most Progressive ever to be shown on a MESHUGGAH release, there’s lots of time changes between harmonic clean guitars and programmed riffing, I suspect this EP being the bands transition from man to machine (see my “Chaosphere” and “Contradiction Collapse” reviews).
I chose to do “Contradictions Collapse” and this EP separately, even if they’re together on the same release, to give a more focused and singular view on both instead of giving you a cheap “sum up” kind of review.
Note: The absence of the track “Aztec Two-Step” is because of the reissue of “Contradictions Collapse” containing this EP minus that track.
