Mesillat Yesharim   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The work Mesillat Yesharim was composed by the influential Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato (1707 - 1746) in 1740 when living in Amsterdam The Netherlands and published in the same city.
Mesillat Yesharim is probably Luzzato's most influential forming part of the curriculum of virtually yeshiva after being introduced there by the Mussar Movement of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter.
Mesillat Yesharim is perhaps the most important Jewish ethical text of the post- Middle Ages period.

 Mesillat Yesharim - Contents
Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, also known as the RaMCHaL after his initials, is best known for his classical work on piety, Mesilas Yesharim (Path of the Just).
The Mesilas Yesharim (Path of the Just) also reflects this approach.
His fame nevertheless caught up with him, and in 5500 (1740), at the turn of the Jewish century, he published his most famous work, the Mesilas Yesharim (Path of the Just).

The Mesilas Yesharim- Path of the Just, a fundamental work of the moral and ethical outlook of a Judaism, gives us his fundamental declaration what that outlook is. That this world is a place of tests.
The Mesilas Yesharim goes so far as to say we are in the midst of a milchama chazaka- a strong battle.
The perfect Jew, says the Mesilas Yesharim, is the one who remains joined in his thoughts to Hashem.

Perhaps you are aware that the Mesilas Yesharim cites this episode of Avram and the four kings as a prime example of fear of sin - yiras chait.
In the end of Perek Chof Dalid, the Mesilas Yesharim quotes the Tana D'vai Eliyahu Rabba, 25, that Hashem does not say the words "do not fear" to a person unless that individual is a TRUE yirai Shamaim.
The Ramchal (author of Mesilas Yesharim) continues in Perek Chof Dalid: there is yet another type of yira called yiras chait - fear of sin itself.

His mission was to bring holiness into the mundane world and sanctify it, and this is why the lowly, bare and earthy stones merited to service him and thereby perform a holy function.
Similarly, Yaakov, who facilitated an infusion of holiness into the human realm, was likened to the Holy Ark, and his body was thus treated in a similar fashion.
(See Koheles Rabbah 7, quoted in chapter 1 of Mesilas Yesharim.) The manner in which we conduct our lives, how we spend out time, where we decide to live, and what is really important in our value system is largely reflective of our focus on our divine work.

In Mesilas Yesharim, the Ramchal (R' Moshe Chaim Luzato) writes of three kinds of yir'ah (fear / awe / awareness of magnitude).
This is distinct from the fear of punishment; it's fear of the sin itself, of the possibility of erring.
Mesilas Yesharim continues that when a traditional source speaks of "yir'ah" without specification, it means yir'as hacheit (fear of the sin [itself]).

Mesilas Yesharim is a guide to character improvement written by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato (a/k/a the Ramchal, after his initials).
The Ramchal bases the structure of Mesilas Yesharim on a progression of personality traits listed by the tanna (mishnaic era rabbi) Rabbi Pinchas ben Ya'ir (quoted in Tr.
For each trait, he has one chapter defining the trait, sometimes he has a second defining subcategories of it, and finally advice for how to acquire it.

In Mesilas Yesharim, the Ramchal explores this world from the perspective of man, describing a ladder of growth that reaches from earth up to heaven.
The first three levels of existence are defined by the Mesilas Yesharim as man's climb up a spiritual ladder, toiling to achieve a small measure of growth.
In this world, man is encouraged to work towards a goal, to be faithful to G-d and observe His law, to climb the ladder of spirituality and overcome the forces of evil.

I think the answer to your question is that it is definitely better to know what your doing is wrong.
Being aware of the fact that what you are doing is wrong will eventually influence you to stop doing it (cf Mesilas yesharim chapter 2).
Another benefit of thinking about your actions right or wrong is this will help you to not act out of habit which the mesilas yesharim describes as a behaviour worse than that of an animals.

Mesilas Yesharim writes that a deep-rooted belief in the concepts of reward and punishment, and a concrete understanding of the "life" awaiting us in the World to Come, are crucial to our continued proficiency as servants of Hashem.
The more acutely we recognize that after we die, we will be forced to account for every moment of our lives, and will be rewarded and/or punished accordingly, the greater the impetus we feel to lead our lives in an appropriate manner.
The more we internalize this concept, says the Mesilas Yesharim, the closer we are to being the complete ovdei Hashem we can be!

His advice to them is to externally stimulate their desire for Torah by involving themselves in its study and fulfillment with great effort.
Therefore, according to the words of the Mesilas Yesharim above, students should be encouraged to learn in an exciting and challenging environment which stimulates the mind and the emotions of the child.

The Mesilas Yesharim writes that in the military, they could prevent an incoming arrow from penetrating a protective shield by covering the shield with a slimy substance.
One "good line" that cynically mocks a mussar lecture deflects incoming arrows of rebuke intended to soften the heart of the listener, just as the slime that covers the battlefield shields deflects the incoming arrows of attack.
We have to be extremely careful, writes the Mesilas Yesharim, not to fall into the trap of cynicism.

Although humans, to a large degree, are cognizant of what is and what ought to be and are impressed by it, it is quite difficult to take action in making reality conform to their idealized picture of what ought to be.
A person who uses Torah and mitzvos as vehicles for aligning his self-image with his concept of a tzadik has not begun to understand what it means to do a mitzvah “lishma” (with pure intention).
This particular snare, namely, the desire to be involved in actions which serve to propel a particular self-image, is one of the most insidious weapons the yeitzer hara (evil inclination) uses in battling against us.
