Moshe Chaim Luzzatto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One major rabbinic contemporary who praised Luzzatto's writing was Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna, the Vilna Gaon (1720 - 1797), who was considered to be the most authoritative Torah sage of the modern era as well as a great kabbalist himself.
He was reputed to have said after reading the Mesillat Yesharim, that were Luzzatto still alive, that he would have walked from Vilna to learn at Luzzatto's feet.
It was the great Torah ethicist, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter (1810 - 1883) who placed the Messilat Yesharim at the heart of the Mussar (ethics) curriculum of the major Yeshivot of Eastern Europe.

Mesillat Yesharim puts it as follows: According to strict justice, there should be no correction at all for a sin, for in truth, how can a man straighten that which he has made crooked, when the sin is already done?
Rav Elchanan rejects the applicability of this answer to the statement of the Mesillat Yesharim, which indicates that even one who has completely and sincerely regretted his actions requires the attribute of mercy in order for his repentance to be effective.
Rav Elchanan therefore suggests another answer, based on a distinction of the author of the Mesillat Yesharim in another section.

Though Rabbi Moshe Chaim is best known for his masterly ethical work, Mesillat Yesharim, probably the most popular musar work in Jewish literature, his main focus in most of his numerous works was on the kabbalah.
In 1740, at the age of 33, he published the Mesillat Yesharim, which contains nary a Kabbalistic word.
It is a moving, inspiring work describing how a thoughtful Jew may climb the ladder of purification until he attains the level of holiness.

Leviticus : Perashat Kedoshim : The Situation of Holiness — A Jewish Magazine, an Interfaith Movement
Luzzatto offers an entirely different perspective on the concept of kedusha, most radically in Mesillat Yesharim, the book ironically most frequently perceived as being very "mussar" or "Litvish", that is, of an admonishing and prohibitive nature.
The person who enlightens him, essentially the mouthpiece of Mesillat Yesharim, is what in contemporary parlance might be recognized as a "hippie", part of a brotherhood who live on the outskirts of town, read Tehillim, sing songs; existing on the fringe of the "normative" Jewish community.
In the greater communities perception, these "freaks" were not considered to be thinkers at all, hence the scholar's tension in even engaging him in dialogue.

Ran explains, on the basis of a gemara (Mesechta Shabbat 105b) which tells us to view one who breaks vessels in his wrath as if he were an idol worshipper, that anger can bring one to a momentary abandonment of his faith for which he will be punished in Gehinnom.
The comparison of the angry fellow to an idol worshipper is elucidated by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzatto in his classic "Mesillat Yesharim." One who is quick to anger over anything which is not to his liking loses control of his senses and would destroy the entire world if he only could.
He is as out of control as a wild beast and is ready to commit all the sins in the world if his anger should lead him to do so, because he is completely dominated by that anger.
