Mesite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are two genera, Mesitornis, the White-breasted Mesite and the Brown Mesite, and Monias, the Subdesert Mesite.
Mesites are vocal birds, with calls similar to passerine song, used for territorial defence.
None of the mesites have any legal protection, and none are the subject of ex-situ conservation.

The Mesites are a special family of three distinctive species found only in Madagascar.
Dee (1986) summarizes this way: "This extraordinary bird occupies a monotypic genus in an endemic Madagascar family of little obvious affinity, both of whose other members are under threat." The Monias is a gregarious bird, living in groups of 4-10 on the ground, twitching their tails as they hustle through the undergrowth.
Good photos of all three mesites are in Morris and Hawkins (1998), and their habitats covered by Dee (1986), but a complete family introduction, with some superb photos (e.g., Brown Mesite at nest) is in Evans et al.

We had unrivalled views of Sub-desert Mesite and managed seven of the ten couas and ten of the fifteen vangas.
Suddenly the bird's strident alarm call was issued only a few metres from my left ear and the beast shot up off the ground into an octopus tree where, completely in the open, it pointed its beak skywards and froze in its defence posture.
We had over five minutes looking at and photographing the Sub-desert Mesite before, as suddenly as it had arrived, it shot off the branch and disappeared through the tangles of the spiny desert.

One of these is Brown Mesite, a secretive species of the forest floor, and another is the fearsome Henst's Goshawk, a highly vocal raptor which we will hope to see sitting in the canopy, glowering at us from under its heavy brows.
We may encounter a small party of mesites creeping furtively though the undergrowth and perhaps find a pair of ground-rollers attending their nesting burrow at the base of a tall Didierea.
We have a good chance of finding the vangas, our attention attracted by their whistled calls from the tree-tops, and of coming across a troop of mesites walking sedately through the sparse undergrowth and stopping occasionally to give their shrill duetted calls.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Madagascar
Madagascar is well known for the very high level of endemism with an incredible half of the regularly breeding species endemic to this large island.
Madagascar is home to three endemic bird families being the Mesites, Ground-Rollers and Asities (as well as the Couas included with Cuckoos) and shares Cuckoo-Roller and the Vangas only with the nearby Comoros.
Specialities we saw here but not elsewhere in Madagascar were Henst’s Goshawk, Brown Mesite, Red-fronted Coua, Dark Newtonia, Yellow-browed Oxylabes and Pollen’s Vanga whilst those species shared only with Vohiparara were Madagascar Crested Ibis and the stunning Pitta-like Ground Roller.

Two very special birds here are the near mythical Sub-desert Mesite, which we may find adopting its strange, cryptic posture on a thorny branch, and the Long-tailed Ground-Roller.
We shall also bird some stunted ridge-top forest where we may locate Red-fronted Coua, the elegant Rufous-headed Ground-Roller, the highly elusive Brown Emutail, Rand’s and the recently discovered Cryptic Warblers, Pollen’s Vanga and, if we are lucky, Madagascar Cuckoo Hawk.
