Method of making mesitylene - Patent 5087781
Mesitylene (1,3,5 trimethylbenzene) is made by passing acetone in the vapor phase over a niobium catalyst.
Mesitylene's symmetry and high reactivity (electrophilic substitutions are activated by the methyl groups) lead to the possibility of synthesizing specific derivatives such as polymethylaromatics, trimesic acid, hindered diamines, and other as described in U.S. Pat.
These have boiling points close to that of mesitylene and it is expected that their separation from mesitylene will be difficult; therefore, they have to be minimized or selectively hydrogenated in order to obtain high purity mesitylene.

Separation of mesitylene from 4-ethyl toluene by azeotropic distillation - US Patent 6033529   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Mesitylene cannot be separated from 4-ethyl toluene by distillation because of the proximity of their boiling points.
Mesitylene and 4-ethyl toluene boil only one degree apart and have a relative volatilty of 1.05 A process to separate these two would enhance their value as pure compounds.
Analysis indicated a vapor composition of 93% mesitylene and 7% 4-ethyl toluene; a liquid composition of 87.5% mesitylene and 12.5% 4-ethyl toluene.

Organic Synthesis - Mesitylene   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
During this period a large proportion of the mesitylene distils and should be kept separate from the subsequent distillate.
Upon cooling, mesitylene sulfonic acid crystallizes and the unsulfonated material remains as an oil on the surface.
The connections on the apparatus, in which the mesitylene is obtained from the crude reaction mixture, should be tight, since the fumes evolved during the heating are very irritating.

Pseudocumene and mesitylene production and coproduction thereof with xylene - Patent 5004854
In the practice of the invention, a C9 alkylaromatic charge stream having the approximate composition shown in Table II is charged to reactor 8 and upgraded to pseudocumene, mesitylene, xylenes, and benzene over a shape-selective zeolite catalyst having a silica-to-alumina ratio of 1 to 12.
An essential aspect of the invention is the use of a shape-selective catalyst for upgrading whereby labile C.sub.9 aromatics, such as propyl and methylethylbenzenes are selectively converted to xylene, toluene, benzene and small amounts of light gases without converting the trimethylbenzenes.
Trimethylbenzenes are recovered in which the rati of psuedocumene to mesitylene is 5 to 1.

Method of making mesitylene - US Patent 5087781   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Method of making mesitylene comprising passing acetone over a niobium supported catalyst at a temperature of about 250° C. to about 500° C. Method of claim 1 wherein the catalyst support is silica.
Calculated mesitylene selectivities were 61% and 70% for reaction temperatures of 300° C. and 400° C., respectively.
Also, the undesirable C10s decrease by a factor 2 when the temperature is increased from 300° C. to 400° C. During the second period, the catalyst deactivated from 70% to 60% conversion after 92 hours of reaction.
