Mesodma is a genus of extinct mammal that lived during the upper Cretaceous and Paleocene periods of North America.
The species Mesodma hensleighi is found in the Hell Creek Formation in the US and in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Species: Mesodma formosa is also known as Cimolomys formosus; Cimolomys gracilis; Halodon formosus; M.

It has also been known as Ectypodus (partly); Mesodma (partly); Neoplagiaulax (partly).
The species Mimetodon silberlingi was named by Simpson G.G. in 1935 and Schiebout in 1974.
Remains were found in the Torrejonian-Tiffanian (Middle Paleocene)-age strata in the Gidley Quarry of Montana and in Wyoming, North Dakota and Alberta, Canada.

 MESODMA CRETACEOUS MAMMAL FOSSILS
This is a tiny fossil tooth from a small primitive mammal that scampered beneath the feet of some of the Earth's largest and most feared dinosaurs of the Cretaceous.
This animal was a small rodent and belongs to the species Mesodma.
While very tiny indeed, this fossil tooth is highly rare and specimens such as this are seldom found in private ownership.

The species of Alphadon and Mesodma appear to be even younger than those known from the Kaiparowits Formation.
Unfortunately, many of these species are based primarily on size and it is now clear (see Eaton, Diem et al., in press) that species of Alphadon and Mesodma appear to have had a wide range of sizes throughout the Late Cretaceous and that size alone is not a reliable taxonomic guide.
Two new specimens (M1s) of Mesodma (UMNH VP 6789, 6794) compare closely to specimens from the Kaiparowits Plateau specimens (MNA V5291 and V7525 respectively) and are similar to M.

Geographic range extensions include: (1) most southerly records of Cimolodon nitidus, Alphadon lulli, Mesodma ambigua, M. hensleighi, M. sp.
Within the Hanna Basin, no genera of multituberculates or peradectians from the Ferris Formation have been documented in strata both of Lancian and Puercan age; several examples of pseudoextinction, however, may exist through taxonomic artifact.
Temporal range extensions include first: (1) Puercan records of Mesodma hensleighi and Ectypodus spp.; (2) records within Puercan Interval-zone Pu3 of Ptilodus sp.

These are both photomicrographs that Francesca took of a right upper first molar of the multituberculate mammal Mesodma.

Mammalian fossils from Dogie include teeth of new forms as well as of species known from other deposits yielding fossils of early Paleocene age, particularly from the San Juan Basin, New Mexico.
Dogie mammals already known from other areas include the multituberculate Mesodma thompsoni, the periptychid condylarths Carsioptychus coarctatus and Haploconus inopinatus, and the mioclaenid condylarth Bomburia prisca.
Dogie new mammalian taxa representing genera known from other areas include new species of the multituberculates Ptilodus, Cimolodon, and Viridomys, and possibly new species of the marsupial Peratherium, the palaeoryctid Gelastops, the carnivore Protictis, and the condylarth Baioconodon.

Temporal constraint of the Naashoibito Member of the Kirtland Formation is less precise, but the presence of the multituberculate Essonodon browni and the probable presence of the dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex suggest that it is correlative with the Lancian Land Mammal “Age” (~68-65.5 Ma).
Essonodon is very common in this stratum; Mesodma, a cimolodontid, and a fourth multituberculate are also present.
Middle and late Puercan (earliest Paleocene) mammal-bearing localities reflect greater neoplagiaulacid diversity, including endemic Neoplagiaulacidae.

This very possibly indicates reworking rather than a late surviving Ornithomimus foot.
Of the mammals, an otherwise Lancian multituberculate, Mesodma hensleighi, turned up in the Puercan.
No indication of possible reworking is reported, and this species may have been a further K-T survivor.
