Beaked whale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are one of the least-known families of large mammals: several species have only been described in the last two decades, and it is entirely possible that more remain as yet undiscovered.
Three of these, Indopacetus, the Hyperoodon and the Mesoplodon, are united in a single subfamily, the Hyperoodontidae.
For further details on the genus Mesoplodon, containing thirteen of the beaked whales, see Mesoplodont Whale.

CMS: Mesoplodon bowdoini, Andrews' beaked whale
Adult males are fl to dark blue all over, except for the tip of the rostrum and the lower jaw, which are white.
Mesoplodon bowdoini can be distinguished from all other species of Mesoplodon by the shape of its teeth (male and female), and differences in the morphology of its skull, especially the proportions of the rostrum, separation of the nasals, the shape of the prominential notches, and the nature of the antorbital processes.
According to Baker (2002) Mesoplodon bowdoini is known only from 35 specimens and has a southern, circumpolar distribution north of the Antarctic convergence, between 32 degree and 54 degree 30'S. Distribution of Mesoplodon bowdoini (mod.

Apparently limited to the North Pacific, Hubbs' beaked whale is known from central British Columbia to southern California in the east, and from Japan in the west.
