Mesosaurus was one of the first reptiles to return to the water where its amphibian ancestors originally came from.
Mesosaurus was significant in the proving of the theory of continental drift because its remains were found in southern Africa and eastern South America- two far-spaced areas.

Mesosaurus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mesosaurus is an extinct genus of anapsid reptile from the Permian period.
Mesosaurus was significant in the providing evidence of the theory of continental drift, because its remains were found in southern Africa and eastern South America, two far away places.
As Mesosaurus lived in fresh water, and therefore could not have crossed the Atlantic Ocean, this distribution indicated that Africa and South America used to be joined together.

::: Info Dinosauria :::: Mesosaurus tenuidens
The cranial osteology of the aquatic reptile Mesosaurus tenuidens is redescribed on the basis of new and previously examined materials from the Lower Permian of both southern Africa and South America.
Mesosaurus is distinguished from other mesosaurs in exhibiting an absolutely larger skull and possessing relatively longer marginal teeth.
Reinterpretation of the morphology and the organization of the marginal teeth of Mesosaurus suggests that they were used to capture individually small, nektonic prey.

Mesosaurus possibly hibernated but not in mud since their feet are not designed to burrow.
The Mesosaurus is believed to have been a filter feeder due to the structure of the teeth and fed on plankton, fish eggs and small larva.
Due to the shape of the front feet the Mesosaurus moved with great difficulty on land, but were profound swimmers by using their tails and possibly webbed feet to propel them in the water.

Instead of pointing to analyses, let us test the suggestion that *Mesosaurus* is similar to *Lariosaurus,* a nothosaur sauropterygian (and a basal lepidosauromorphan -- sister group to plesiosaurs).
[*] indicates a presence in *Mesosaurus*; [_] that character is not present in *M.*; [/] indicates I cannot verify this feature.
Also note the pelvic anatomy: ilium is slender and almost rod-like, with a short pubis, not at all broad and plate-like, and the slender elements of the shoulder and pelvis bely the condition seen in sauropterygians.

Mesosaurus could not have traveled across an ocean between the continents.
Either the continents were side-by-side or Mesosaurus evolved separately on two continents at the same time, an unlikely explanation.

Draw conclusions why Mesosaurus has only been found in Africa and Brazil and how its fossil remains serve as important evidence that shows where two continents were once joined together.
Teacher will cut up the drawing of the Mesosaurus skeleton and make copies of the bones in disarray that are distributed to study groups.
Students will discuss what it means that this Mesosaurus, which has only been found twice in the entire world, appears in two places nearby in the same district when the two continents once met in the Permian period, but that are now separated by the width of the Atlantic Ocean.

Wegener discovered that fossil remains of prehistoric animals such as the Mesosaurus, which could not have swum across an ocean, were found on Africa and South America.
He also noticed that an uncommon, extinct plant was found in only a few parts of the world, too far away to have spread its seed by wind or water.

It couldn't have crossed an ocean, yet Mesosaurus fossils are found in both South America and Africa.

Firstly, he was able to show that fossils of a small reptile called Mesosaurus were found only in South Africa and Brazil.
To Wegener it seemed that the only sensible explanation was that South Africa and Brazil had been joined together at the time when Mesosaurus lived.
Secondly, he realised that the rocks in South Africa and southeast Brazil were very similar, both in age and structure.

(pronounced MESS-oh-SAWR-us) Mesosaurus (meaning "middle lizard") was an odd, fresh-water dwelling reptile (not a dinosaur) that lived from the late Carboniferous period to the early Permian period.
It was a lightly-built, four-legged animal with an elongated head and snout with nostrils near its eyes.
It was a primitive reptile that returned to the water about 300 million years ago after having adapted to the land; Mesosaurus was one of the first aquatic reptiles.

By mapping out the distributions of particular fossils, ancient oceans and continents can be delineated.
For example, a certain Mesozoic fossil (Mesosaurus) occurs only in western Africa and in eastern South America, which shows that those continents were next to each other in Mesozoic time.
On the other hand, fossils of particular marine shellfish (brachiopods) of Silurian age in coastal Maine and New Brunswick are different from brachiopods of the same age in western New England and northern Maine.
