Topic: Mesosiderite

Mesosiderite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most recent fall of a mesosiderite occurred at Dong Ujimqin Qi in China, on September 7, 1995, where three large pieces with a total mass of 129 kg fell.
The fall of the Estherville mesosiderite in Iowa, USA, occurred on May 10, 1879.
The other observed mesosiderite falls occurred in 1842 at Barea (Spain), in 1880 at Veramin (Iran), in 1933 at Dyarrl Island (Papua New Guinea), and at Patwar (India) in 1935.

 mesosiderite
The name "mesosiderite" comes from the Greek mesos for "middle" or "half," and sideros for "iron" and reflects the fact that these meteorites are roughly equal mixture of differentiated silicates and iron-nickel.
The iron-nickel in mesosiderites, on the other hand, looks like the metal in group IIIAB iron meteorites, and shows every sign of having derived from the core of a completely different asteroid than that which spawned the silicates.
One possible explanation of the origin of mesosiderites is that a collision took place between two differentiated asteroids in which the still-liquid core of one asteroid mixed with the solidified crust of the other.

 What are Meteorites
Mesosiderites and Pallasites are the two main groups of the stony-iron meteorites.
Mesosiderites consist of broken angular fragments of mantle rock and nickel-iron that have been fused together by impacts with another body.
Pallasites, some of the most attractive meteorites, are believed to have formed at the core-mantle boundary of asteroids and contain crystals of olivine (peridot).

Unusual Meteorite Features (NWA 1827 with Crystal Inclusions) - Meteorites Australia
Several NWA Mesosiderites have now been found and classified under different numbers but they are mostly thought to belong to the same large heterogeneous Mesosiderite with a Total Known Weight exceeding 22kg.
NWA Mesosiderites belonging to the 2C subgroup include: NWA 1827, NWA 1879, NWA 1882, NWA 1912, NWA 1951, NWA 1982, NWA 3055 and probably NWA 1645.
The mineralogy of this Mesosiderite is of a mostly medium-grained Igneous texture with some large mineral clasts of Orthopyroxene and Plagioclase which are commonly surrounded by metal-rich areas.

Although this rock resembles a mesosiderite in its hand-sample aspect and in having Ni-bearing iron metal, it is not a meteorite.
This inference is based on the lack of a fusion crust, the lack of cosmogenic nuclides, oxygen with terrestrial isotope ratios, and several mineral chemical criteria.
Mesosiderite imposters like this may be recognized by (1) the presence of Cu metal in hand sample or as microscopic blebs in the low-Ni metal (kamacite), (2) the absence of high-Ni metal (taenite), and (3) the presence of iron carbide (cohenite) enclosing the kamacite.

 NORTHWEST AFRICA 1827 PHOTO
The general appearance of NWA 1827 was found to be similar to that of a mesosiderite, exhibiting an equilibrated, igneous texture, and consisting primarily of metal and abundant orthopyroxene, along with minor troilite, chromite and merrillite, and rare anorthite.
However, NWA 1827 was inconsistent with a classification as a mesosiderite for several reasons.
However, further analysis conducted at the Northern Arizona University (T. Bunch) of a larger area of this heterogeneous mesosiderite revealed sparse eucrite and diogenite inclusions, and has led to the conclusion that NWA 1827 is most similar to a mesosiderite of the 2C subgroup, the second such mesosiderite after RKPA79015.

 abst36-7
The paucity of olivine in mesosiderites and the lack of metal-poor or troilite-rich meteorites from the mesosiderite body probably reflect biased sampling.
Mesosiderites may be olivine-poor because mantle material was preferentially excluded from the metal-rich regions of the reaccreted body.
Be pair we derive a terrestrial age of 18 ± 1 ka, which seems too recent to be consistent with the original description of the main mass having a heavily wind eroded base, overhung by the upper part of the meteorite.

This is a very unusual mesosiderite in that it has such a high metal content that UCLA originally assumed it to be a silicated iron and only after elemental analysis determined it to actually be a high metal mesosiderite.
Unlike, most mesosiderites, this one had a very high metal content at one end and a somewhat lower content at the other end.
There is not a lot of this mesosiderite to go around, so if you are looking to add a really beautiful, high metal mesosiderite to your collection you may want to reserve a specimen sooner than later.

Mesosiderites probably represent the shattered regolith of an asteroid that has been the target of several asteroid-asteroid collisions.
Pieces of this regolith can be blasted off the surface of a larger body, and eventually reach the Earth as meteorites, or if large enough, as impacting bolides.
The sulfur in mesosiderites is primarily in the form of troilite (FeS) - a sulfide mineral.

 Meteorite Types: Mesosiderites
Mesosiderites, one class of stony-iron meteorites, are the most unusual.
A mixture of metal grains, pyroxene, olivine, and plagioclase, the "mixture" in Mesosiderites is technically known as a breccia, which is a matrix of broken rock fragments cemented by fine-grained material formed from the surface fragments of an asteroid.
In the MeteoriteKit we include a slice of the Vaca Muerta mesosiderite.
