Mesquite prospered in the late 19th to the early 20th century and became a growing farming community, growing cotton, hay, corn and sugar and using the railroad line to ship the raw goods.
The population exploded, growing from 1,696 in the 1950 census to 27,526 in 1960 and 55,131 in 1970.
By 1970, LBJ Freeway was constructed, connecting Mesquite to its neighbors, Garland to the north and Balch Springs to the south.

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo is a rodeo located in Mesquite, Texas that operates during rodeo season (roughly April through September).
By the mid 1980s, rodeo performances at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo began to be broadcast on ESPN and then later TNN and Fox Sports Net Southwest.
In 1985, ground was broken for the Mesquite Arena (now Resistol Arena), a new facility for the Mesquite Rodeo, located near Interstate 635 and Scyene Road.
