		Verdi suggested that all Italian musicians should assemble a Requiem in honor of the master opera composer and conductor and began the effort by submitting the "Libera me." During the next year a Requiem for Rossini was compiled; however, this work was never performed in Verdi's lifetime.
		Helmuth Rilling premiered the complete Messa per Rossini 1988 in Stuttgart.
		Verdi kept toying with his "Libera me," frustrated that the combined commemoration of Rossini's life would not be performed.

	Gioachino Antonio Rossini - Scoring a legacy of accolades
		Gioachino Antonio Rossini was a foreign associate of the Institute besides holding the post of Grand Officer of the region of Honour with many other prestigious accolades attached to his name.
		Originally established by the Pesaro Town Council in 1980, the Rossini Opera Festival was integrated as an international operatic event in a unanimous decision by the Italian Parliament.
		With the aim of reviving and restoring Rossini's great contribution to the operatic world, the festival has been legally denominated a non-profit trust by a group of public and private founders: the Pesaro Town and County Councils, the Banca delle Marche and Banca Popolare dell'Adriatico trusts and the Scavolini trust.

		In 1868, four days after the death of Gioacchino Rossini, composer of The Barber of Seville, Moses, and William Tell (among much else), Verdi proposed a requiem mass for the illustrious deceased consisting of individual movements by Italy's "most eminent" composers.
		The composite requiem mass for Rossini was to have been performed in 1869 in Bologna to commemorate the anniversary of Rossini's death.
		Verdi proposed that the anniversary of his death be commemorated by a Requiem Mass to which all the leading Italian composers of church music should contribute a movement.

		Carmela Remigio, soprano; Chorus and Orchestra of the St. Cecilia Academy of Rome/Myung-Whun Chung, cond.
		Conductor Myung-Whun Chung also gives us Verdi's 1869 Libera me, Domine, composed for a proposed memorial Messa per Rossini, which was supposed to have been a collaboration with 12 colleagues who dropped out.
		Chung revealed his affinity for Italian sacred music as a last-hour substitute for the ailing Giulini in a Los Angeles Phil performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater during the 1980s—more vibrant, I thought at the time, than Giulini's was likely to have been.

		The 1880 Ave Maria (separated from its companion work, the Pater noster), and the plaintive Ave Maria from Otello are both beautifully sung by Carmela Remigio.
		That said, Remigio doesn't quite have the requisite steel in her tone for the declamatory Libera me, Domine from the Messa per Rossini (and later revised for the Requiem Mass for Manzoni).
		Even in this early incarnation, tremendous demands are made on the soprano soloist, demands that Remigio meets with convincing passion if not the enthralling sounds of such Requiem luminaries as Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland.
