  Message Drums
Message drums are actually large slit gongs, usually constructed from hollowed-out logs, that are used to send messages over considerable distances.
Small groups of students will each develop a code consisting of several messages that can be sent using two drum pitches, and will demonstrate their code to the class by using it to successfully send messages across a classroom.
Messages could be relayed from village to village, but if the message travelled to an area where a different language was spoken, it might not be understood anymore.

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Drum   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drumskin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with parts of a player's body, or with some sort of implement such as a drumstick, to produce sound.
Drums with cylindrical shells can be open at one end (as in the timbales) or, more commonly in the Western tradition, they can have another drum head.
The sound of a drum depends on several variables including shell shape, size, thickness of shell, materials of the shell, type of drumhead, tension of the drumhead, position of the drum, location, and how it is struck.

Online Drums --> Info and Comparisons   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The bass drum was sometimes kicked to produce a sound, and is occasionally still called a ''kick drum'', though bass drums are now nearly always pedal-operated, and sometimes even played with two pedals to allow for greater speed.
In a drum kit, the bass drum is much smaller, most commonly 20" or 22" but sizes from 18" to 24" are quite normal, 26" is not unusual in a big band, and extremes both larger and smaller are sometimes seen.
Originally two identically tuned bass drums were used for this, but a double beater (twin-pedal) on the same drum using an extension mechanism (see illustration) is now more common, although in a live show nearly all metal bands use two bass drums, as the effect is much more impressive.

Drum (communication)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
There are different communication drum types, although they are all commonly known in Central Africa as "talking drums" or "message drums" and are capable of producing different toness as well as rhythms.
The message-sending logs are not drums at all from the technical point of view, since they do not have a skin or membrane that would vibrate as they are beaten.
The drum often has a narrow neck between the drum heads, across which stretch the sinews holding the skins; the drum will be held under one arm, which is squeezed down on the sinews to vary the tension in the drumheads and therefore the pitch of the sound.

Thus, when there is a message error such as a shortage of money which is disadvantageous to the information receiving party, the receiving party will make a claim against the information transmitting party and request correction of the amount on the basis of the record.
Such a message signal is applied from the message editing unit 15 to the telephone line 19 via the trunk 18.

 Talking Drums
Message drums, or slit gongs, are huge log drums that can be heard miles away, and their messages are usually in some kind of code, although the code may be based on spoken sentences.
Message drums were invented independently by several different cultures around the world.
The player holds the drum between his upper arm and left side and uses his arm to squeeze and relax the cords while he is striking the drum with a curved stick in his right hand.

Drums with cylindrical shells can be open at one end (as is the case with timbales), or can have two drum heads.
Drums with two heads covering both ends of a tubular shell often have a small hole halfway between the two drumheads; the shell forms a resonating chamber for the resulting sound.
The sound of a drum depends on several variables, including shape, size and thickness of its shell, materials from which the shell was made, type of drumhead used and tension applied to it, position of the drum, location, and a manner in which it is struck.

So if the live drum is quiet, the visitors can look at past activity while they wait for their cave tour (in Onondaga cave: the CCM sensors are in isolated Cathedral cave, 3km west of it).
