Messaging spam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Messaging spam, sometimes called SPIM, is a type of spam where the target is instant messaging services.
The increase in messaging spam may be motivated by its rise in popularity as well as the many steps to crack down on spamming since the late 1990s.
Windows Messaging spam can be delivered using any NetBIOS port, so to block it at a firewall entails closing down ports 135 through 139, and 445.

Spam (electronic) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spamming an internet forum is when a user posts something which is off-topic or doesn’t have anything to do with the current subject.
Spam is frequently used to advertise scams, such as diploma mills, advance fee fraud, pyramid schemes, stock pump-and-dump schemes, and phishing.
The excessive amount of SPAM in the sketch comes from British rationing in World War II, SPAM was one of the few foods that was not restricted and widely available; so by the time of the sketch, the British were fed up with the luncheon meat.

Link spam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Link spam (also called blog spam or comment spam) is a form of spamming or spamdexing that recently became publicized most often when targeting weblogs (or blogs), but also affects wikis (where it is often called wikispam), guestbooks, and online discussion boards.
Link spamming originally appeared in internet guestbooks, where spammers repeatedly fill a guestbook with links to their own site and no relevant comment to increase search engine rankings.
Wiki spam sometimes only appears on a wiki's sandbox page, but is often found defacing multiple pages.

Spam is also used because some marketers claim that response rates are significantly higher than those for traditional junk mail (eg 0.5% rather than 0.001%), although such figures are problematical.
An August 2001 Gallup Poll report indicates that most US email users say that up to 30% of messages they receive are spam; 39% say they receive more than that, including 18% who say that at least half their e-mail is spam.
In practice many consumers appear to be manually identifying and preemptively deleting spam on the basis of the message title, the sender's email address or even the ccTLD (with the exclusion of much email from Romania or S Korea).

Six Apart Guide to Combatting Comment Spam
The ideal solution would block all comment spam without any inconvenience to legitimate posters; unfortunately, in practice, that's no more possible than it is for a store to prevent every instance of shoplifting with no inconvenience to honest customers.
A simple, rudimentary form of comment spam involves spammers sitting in front of web browsers, pasting spam into your comment form, and submitting it manually -- in other words, submitting spam the same way legitimate comments are submitted by your readers.
Or, to defend against spammers who send a flood of spam -- dozens or hundreds of comments in the span of a few minutes -- your comment script could place a limit on the number of comments that can be sent from a single IP address during any given period of time.

Messaging Spam Heads For Your PC - Xtremecomputing Forums
It is thought that "spimmers" have developed the idea because of the attention-grabbing nature of IM, and the increasingly effective spam filters that specialist companies have developed.
So there are fears that some people may be taken in by the spim messages because they think they are being directed to certain websites by people they know.
In fact, the messages are generated automatically, in a very similar way to spam.

Spam accounts for close to half of all text messages sent to cell phones, a percentage that has more than doubled in just one year, said a text messaging provider Monday.
The economics of cell phones -- and thus the spam they receive -- is quite different from e-mail, Begert noted.
"With mobile spam, consumers have to pay for the delivery of annoying, unwanted messages to their personal phone," he said as he made a pitch for his company's services.

The idea of only permitting those in an address book to send messages is interesting, but will not work in many situations (someone calling from a payphone or sending the message via the web -- unless you made them enter their normal number during the course of sending the message).

ii.com • Reverse Spam Filtering: "Winning Without Fighting" by Nancy McGough
After years of thinking about, writing about, and filtering messages, I've decided that the best strategy for me is to not filter spam, but instead to filter non-spam and let the dregs, which are often spam, fall through my filters and land in catchall mailboxes.
Since the non spam messages, if there are any, bubble to the top of the sorted-by-spam-score box, I need to look carefully at only the top of these catchall mailboxes.
When I find a non-spam message in a catchall box, I “bounce forward” it to one of my magnet-updater email addresses so that my non-spam filters will catch this type of message in the future.

After years of narrow focus on fighting spam, messaging security vendors are branching out in new directions as corporate customers demand more from them than filtering unwanted e-mail.
Messaging security vendors face a dilemma; they must stay focused on blocking spam, viruses and other nasty code flooding corporate e-mail streams.
But as spam and virus blocking become check-list items instead of purchase drivers, vendors looking to stand out are adding new features ranging from encryption and policy enforcement for outbound messages to new product lines that protect communications other than e-mail, such as instant messaging or Web interactions.
