Review: "Mistheria: Messenger Of The Gods" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
Despite the album having a legion of fantastic musicians, and tons of fantastic musicianship to go along with it, the bottom line with this album is the great compositions.
Messenger of the Gods is the first solo CD from Mistheria, but with 32 different guest musicians, this is far from a one man show.
Messenger of the Gods has the usual keyboard wanking that you would expect from someone who self-proclaims they are a “virtuoso keyboardist”.

Quicksilver Messenger Service and Nicky Hopkins
Instead, this is a guitar-led acid-folk album that manages to stay focused while it chugs along (the imprisoned Valenti's one song, appropriately entitled "Dino's Song" is a good example of this).
It isn't really a singer-songwriter album, although many of the tracks are apparently reflective of his life a session pianist.
So, this album is generally good, but it's never really clear as to who is in charge - with Williams singing and Hopkins's piano not really up-front a lot.

Lee "Scratch" Perry : Dub Messenger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
An artist is as willfully bizarre (and as prolific) as Lee "Scratch" Perry is bound to make a few missteps, and this is one of them.
Although the insert gives performance credit to the Upsetters, there isn't a single analog instrument to be heard on this album, leading to the strong suspicion that all the music was produced on a keyboard by Perry and/or producer Lloyd "Bullwackies" Barnes.
The sound is sterile and flat, and though the album is partially redeemed by Perry's typically off-kilter rantings on such subjects as international finance, nursery rhyme characters and the nature of the cosmos, there is none of the sonic adventurousness that marks the best of his work.

 Filmtracks: The Messenger (Eric Serra)
So much of the album is barely audible that I have no choice but to call the first half simply boring, though the volume and pace picks up near its finish.
After the opening statement of theme, which itself is troubled and introverted, the album drags along at a snail's pace for the next twelve tracks.
Needless to say, this album was a major disappointment for me. A film of this genre and magnitude deserves a score that is more passionate and involving.

EvilSponge: Album: Kill the Messenger by The Indicators
Their sophomore CD release, Kill the Messenger, is one of the strongest albums from the Atlanta music scene I’ve heard in awhile.
Goldman’s songwriting shifts somewhat for this album as well, with songs that often remind the listener of melodic travel ditties and drawling vocal harmonies a la The Bodeans.
Although Kill the Messenger certainly signals a change in musical direction for the band, Dave McNair’s cover of I Got a Line on You (by Spirit) is a direct reminder of The Indicators’ previous wiz-bang garage rock, sounding more like a live track than anything else on the album.

Review : Willie Williams - Messenger Man
So in contrast then -- with this subtle Willie Williams album, it is a pleasure to hear reggae music from a time when it was still a deeply inspired and startlingly original form.
Other tunes on the album are reminiscent of the rhythms from the Kool Roots album.
The last two or three Blood and Fire albums have certainly been good -- but arguably not excellent when seen through the prism of their overall place in reggae history -- in contrast however, this album is excellent, and certainly has its own sense of confidence and assurance, knows where it stands in reggae history.

 Messenger Records - CHRIS WHITLEY
Like an ambient fulcrum around which the rest of the album pivots is the six-and-a-half-minute erotic wonder "City of Women." The track builds slowly as dusky electronic clouds hang over a programmed rhythm tread, with a whistle bleeding in as if from another room.
One of the album's most beguiling songs, "Fireroad (for two)" may usher in the disc with a bumping drum intro and otherworldly melody, but it retails a shadowy vision.
The album, in its use of new electronic influences, stands as another new definition in Whitley's musical scope.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc is, for the most part, a largely orchestral score, supplemented with some synth effects.
However, one cue that stood out in the film (and is missing from the album), was in this sequence: when The Conscience hypothesizes all of the different ways the sword she found as a child arrived in the field.
This album runs about 64 minutes long, and with the exception of the one cue missing that I mentioned above, was very satisfying to listen to.

Hopkins might have become a touring member of the Stones (he was asked to join in 1969), or some other great UK band; or maybe his talent would have been directed along session lines, but his legacy is outstanding for a single musician.

The deficits of the album are the murky production which muddies the vocals and buries the drums and bass.

The album includes six compositions that the band played regularly during its glory years (roughly 1966-1969), and the performances, while lacking some of the exuberance of live renditions, are inspired and technically excellent.
The highlight of this album (for me, anyway) has always been the group's uplifting masterpiece, "The Fool." I confess that I needed a few repeated hearings back of this anthem back in the live performance days to truly appreciate its laid-back virtuosity, but it truly is a composition that stands the test of time.
This album was released in the spring of 1968, a year that produced a great deal of music that's now very hard to listen to.

Edwin McCain : Messenger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Whereas Hootie broke down the commerical doors for this breed of Heartland rock, McCain simply follows the path, winding up where Hootie was after Cracked Rear View -- namely, with a solid collection of no-frills rock, one that pleases without being particularly memorable, outside of a handful of singles.
He was that way from the first, and his third effort, Messenger, is no different apart from the subtle differences -- stylish, radio-ready production from Matt Serletic (a veteran of Matchbox 20 and Collective Soul) and stronger overall songcraft from McCain.
Nevertheless, the best moments from all three records constitute a body of work that stands up strong to his peers, and the best moments from Messenger illustrate that McCain is getting better each time.

On balance this is still just a near-great song, and the bad news is that the rest of the album is as inconsistent as the opening track.
From what I have heard of the first two QMS albums, and as I can see just by looking at their play lists, the group was more into jamming than anything else (each album has a track in double-digits in length, "The Fool" and "Calvary" respectively).
