  Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-4 Nightfighter
This Messerschmitt Bf 110D-3 of 4./ZG 76 operated from Rashid, Iraq, for short period in May. Aircraft such as this were hurriedly overpainted and marked with Iraqi insignia.
Me Bf 110G-4b/R3 flew with the 7 Staffel of III/Nachtjagdgeschwafer 4, which defended the skies of northern Germany during 1944.
With the failure of the Messerschmitt Me 210 series, and a shortage of Ju 88 airframes, the Luftwaffe was forced to retain the Bf 110 in front-live service primarily as a night-fighter, and in 1942 the Daimler Benz DB 605B-1 engine was installed to produce the Bf 110G series.

Willy Messerschmitt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Me 210 turned out to be plagued by massive development problems that were only solved by evolving the type into the Messerschmitt Me 410, and the resulting problems and delays again put the reputation of both Messerschmitt and his namesake company in jeopardy.
Messerschmitt's design philosophy also is evident in his arguments with Alexander Lippisch, who was designing the tailless Me 163 rocket fighter for production at the Messerschmitt works.
Messerschmitt was appointed an Honorary Professor by the Munich Technical College in 1930, and the Vice-President of the Deutsche Akademie für Luftfahrtforschnung (German Academy of Aeronautical Research).

Ironically the BF-110 was pegged as the bomber escort plane of choice at the beginning of the war because of its superior range.
The 110 is not completely hopeless, but to be successful with it the pilot should avoid furballs.
The 110 is also quite slow compared to most dayfighters.

However, the Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft was actively engaged in developing a new twelve-cylinder liquid-cooled inverted-vee engine, the DB 600, which held promise of 1,000 hp; and on the premise that such engines would be available for his prototypes, Messerschmitt began the design of the Bf 110.
To fill the gap an improved version of the Bf 110 was introduced, the G-series with the DB 605 engine which provided 1,475 hp for take-off and 1,355 hp @ 18,700 feet.
It was in a Bf 110 that Rudolf Hess, Deputy Fuhrer of Germany, flew solo to Scotland on the night of May 10,1941, in the hope of negotiating peace terms with Britain, without Hitler's knowledge.

The BF 110 was classified by Germany as a fighter-bomber, though it fit the bill as the latter mostly.
The BF 110 was piloted by two individuals, one working the plane controls itself, whilst the other manning the rear-facing gun turret.
The BF 110 was capable of carrying two external bombs on pylons between the engine and fuselage area.

The initial requirements were for a 20000 km (12428 miles) range, capability for military and civilian roles, at least a 5000 kg (11023 lbs) bomb load to be carried in an internal bomb bay, smaller bombs to be carried externally on under-wing pylons and to have a very clean airframe.
Several schemes were proposed by the Messerschmitt design bureau to extend the range of the Me 264, including towing one Me 264 by another to altitude, in flight refueling by a second Me 264, adding two more engines bringing the total to six and using take-off rocket pods for overload takeoff conditions.
According to Messerschmitt, the components for the first five prototypes were completed, but he lacked the necessary space and facilities in which to construct them.

The Messerschmitt Bf110 was conceived as a heavy day fighter before WW2, and saw successful service with heavy fighter units in the polish and French campaigns of 1940.
Although the Bf 110 was not a great success as a day fighter, it was quite another 'kettle of fish' when adapted as a night fighter to combat RAF Bomber Command's increasingly heavy nocturnal raids over the Reich.
With other mainstream Bf 110 G4s on the market I really could not honestly recommend this one over those considering value for money and ease of build, the High Planes version may be a little more accurate in overall shape profile, but that would be it.

Channel 4 - Classic Weapons of World War II - Aircraft
The twin-engine Me 110 was a powerful escort fighter for bomber formations.
A great deal of work was undertaken on the aerodynamics of the aircraft, with several amendments to the design being incorporated as the war moved on, but the fighter suffered from relatively poor manoeuvrability when compared with the single-engine opposition.
Though the scourge of the Allied bomber, the Me 110 had to watch for the enemy’s fighter escort.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 (often called Me 110) was a twin-engine heavy fighter (Zerstörer) in the service of the Luftwaffe during World War II.
The initial deliveries of the Bf 110 encountered several issues with delivery of the DB 600 motors, and thus BFW was forced to install Junkers Jumo 210B engines which left the Bf 110 seriously underpowered, able to reach a top speed of only 268 mph.
No Bf 110 G-1 existed, as the Bf 110 G-2 became the baseline Bf 110G and was fitted with a large number of Rüstsätze, making the G the most versitile of the Bf 110.

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft of World War II.
Despite suffering setbacks in the summer of 1940 at the hands of the RAF, it continued to be used effectively in other theatres and roles until the last days of the war, particularly as a night fighter against RAF Bomber Commands strategic bombing campaign over the Reich.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the company was renamed to Messerschmitt after July 1938, when Erhard Milch finally allowed Willy Messerschmitt to acquire the company, some late-war aircraft (almost exclusively those built or rebuilt by the Erla Flugzeugwerke) actually carried the name "Me 109", in an apparently erroneous designation stamped onto their aircraft type plates.
Me 109 is known to have been the name used in print by the Luftwaffe propaganda publications as well as by the Messerschmitt company itself after July 1938, and the Luftwaffe personnel, who pronounced it may hundert-neun.
Messerschmitt responded with the updated Me 155A series, but work on the ship was again canceled and the Me 155 was later re-purposed as a high-altitude interceptor.

The Bf 110 was more nimble than the Ju 88, although both aircraft were so weighed down with specialised equipment and radar arrays that they became very vulnerable to RAF Mosquito intruders.

 THE Messerschmitt BF 110 | WARBIRDS | Fighterplanes |
As the Battle of Britain began in July 1940, the Bf 110 units were committed to a policy of bringing the RAF fighters to combat, leaving the German bombers to arrive over England while the RAF were refuelling and re-arming.
The scheme was a failure, since the Messerschmitts could not match the manoeuvrability of the Hurricanes and Spitfires and were unable to defend themselves sufficiently with only one rear-firing machine gun.
Failure of the Me 210 meant that further development of the elderly Bf 110 had to continue, and the next production model was the Bf 110G-1, a heavy day fighter with 1,475 hp DB 605B-1 engines.

Messerschmitt improved the aerodynamic charateristics of the Bf 110 while waiting for the Daimler Benz DB 601A engines to be released.
However, problems with the Messerschmitt Me 210 meant that it couldn't enter service yet for some time, and production of the Bf 110 needed to be resumed.
