Messerschmitt Me 209 II - fighter
High-altitude fighter programme, not related to the earlier Me 209 record aircraft.
The two built were essentially reengined Bf 109s with longer wings and tails.
After official cancellation the development continued under the name Me 109L.

Messerschmitt is a famous German Aircraft manufacturer, known primarily for their World War II Fighter aircraft, notably the Bf 109 and Me 262.
Messerschmitt AG was incorporated as a separate company on July 11 1938, with Willy Messerschmitt as chairman and managing director.
Messerschmitt had its share of poor designs as well; the Me 210, designed as a follow-on to the 110, was a disaster that almost led to the forced dissolution of the company.

The Me 209 was constructed in 1937 and shared only its Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine with the Bf 109.
This first Me 209 project was soon cancelled, and though it never went into wide-scale production, Messerschmitt's design did make its mark with its impressive speed record, which was not broken by another piston-engined aircraft until August 16, 1969, by Darryl G. Greenmayer's highly modified F8F Bearcat.

Because the company was renamed to Messerschmitt after July 1938, when Erhard Milch finally allowed Willy Messerschmitt to acquire the company, some late-war aircraft (almost exclusively those built or rebuilt by the Erla Flugzeugwerke) actually carried the name "Me 109", in an apparently erroneous designation stamped onto their aircraft type plates.
Me 109 is known to have been the name used in print by the Luftwaffe propaganda publications as well as by the Messerschmitt company itself after July 1938, and the Luftwaffe personnel, who pronounced it may hundert-neun.
Messerschmitt responded with the updated Me 155A series, but work on the ship was again canceled and the Me 155 was later re-purposed as a high-altitude interceptor.

The compression ratio was raised to 7.3 on the port side and 7.5:1 on the starboard side cylinders and the maximum rpm was raised to 2800.
The fuselages with their DB 601E engines were unchanged apart from the addition of a lower keel member to support the main landing gear legs, which were moved to the centerline and designed to extend to a more vertical configuration.

At the end of May, Messerschmitt was unpleasantly surprised by the speed record set by the Heinkel He-100 V-8.
This caused the plans to be revised and instead of trying for the record with the V-3, the V-1 was hurriedly equipped with the DB 601ARJ engine which gave a maximum output of 1550hp.
Since the number of DB 603G engines was limited, the RLM requested Messerschmitt to fit his aircraft with the Jumo 213.

About the Awesome Messerschmitt ME-209 pre war Racing Airplane
The Me 209 was intended from the outset as a record breaker but the basic fuselage was used in the otherwise totally different Me 209 V4 in the effort to build a Bf 109 succesor.
With only superficial resemblance to the Bf lO9, the Me 209 was tailored around a specially-built DaimlerBenz DB 601ARJ engine with a take-off rating of 1342 kW (1 800 hp), which could be boosted to a peak of 1715 kW (2,300 hp) for very short periods.
This capability proved sufficient for the Me 209 to set a new record, Flugkapitan Fritz Wendel flying the first specially-prepared proto type on 26 April 1939 at an average speed of 755.136 km/h (469.22 mph).

Messerschmitt answered without hesitation that the Me-262 had been designed from the outset to carry 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of bombs, could possibly carry twice as much, and would be easy to adapt to the "Jabo" role.
Messerschmitt was straining to keep up with demands for production of existing aircraft types, a difficulty compounded by a devastating Allied air raid on the company's plant at Regensburg on 17 August 1943.
By the end of the war, Messerschmitt was working on a prototype of the improved "Me-262B-2a" night fighter with a longer fuselage, increased fuel capacity, and most importantly "Berlin" centimetric radar, with improved range and resolutions and a dish hidden in the nose, instead of the clumsy and drag-inducing "antlers" of the long-wavelength radar.

Messerschmitt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) is a famous German aircraft manufacturer, known primarily for its World War II fighter aircraft, notably the Bf 109 and Me 262.
The Messerschmitt story begins with Professor Willy Messerschmitt joining the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in Augsburg/Bavaria in 1927 and forming a design team.
In practise, due the RLM naming system, all Messerschmitt aircraft from 108 to 163 are designated with Bf prefix, all afterwards as Me.

 FlightSim.Com Feature: Great Airplanes 4: Messerschmitt 262
The Me 262 might seem a strange choice because it wasn't the first jet powered plane to fly; nor, fortunately for the Allies, was it produced in particularly large numbers.
Allied aviators reported encounters with the Me 262 in awed tones, but it wasn't that long before it was proved that shooting one down was possible, the trick being to catch the jet as it slowed in an evasive maneuver, or as the 262 was throttled back to avoid overhauling a target.
As Galland's comment indicates, the Me 262 was a pilot's airplane that was docile in normal flight regimes with well harmonized controls and packing a terrific punch thanks to the four 30 mm cannon with which it was equipped.

Because some leaders in RLM feared, that the new developed jetfighter "Me 262" would at first have some difficulties, it was planned to install the new jet-engines in a plane, as fast as possible.

In 1930, Messerschmitt was appointed Honorary Professor of Aircraft Construction at the Technical College in Munich.
At his Messerschmitt Works in Augsburg he produced a series of outstanding fighter planes remarkable for their speed, including the Me - 209 and the famous single - seater Me - 109, which was first publicly displayed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and was subsequently tested and proven during the Spanish Civil War.
During World War II, the Me - 109 was a highly successful fighter plane utilized extensively in the Polish campaign, in the Low Countries and Scandinavia, not meeting a real challenge until the Battle of Britain.

Even when Messerschmitt took to the air himself for the first time (in 1925) the M17 in which he was flying crashed, putting him in hospital for some time.
The most fantastic of Messerschmitt's war-time designs was the Me 321, a giant glider able to carry a tank that led to the Me 323, a development fitted with engines that could carry up to 130 men.
Soon given the official designation Bf 108, the experience gained by Messerschmitt in developing this little aircraft led to the most important German fighter of World War II, the Messerschmitt 109, in particular the Bf 109E which was the main Luftwaffe fighter during the Battle of Britain.

To meet this need, the Messerschmitt designed the Me 155B and after a clumsy, protracted development period, Blohm & Voss took over and transformed the design into a promising, though technically challenging experimental aircraft called the BV 155.
French progress to develop the Me 155B was so slight that Messerschmitt stopped the work and refocused its own design staff on developing the Me 209 (a pre-war design that set a world speed record in 1939) to meet the Extremer Höhenjäger requirement.
Late in January 1944, the RLM directed Messerschmitt to transfer the whole project to Blohm & Voss and the BV 155 was born.

Willy Messerschmitt decided to see if the racer might make a good fighter, and came up with the "Me-209V4" prototype, which performed its initial flight on 12 May 1939.
Messerschmitt did complete one more aircraft in the series, the "Me-309V4", which was the prototype for the proposed "Me-309A-2" heavy fighter, with an armament of no less than four MG-131s, two MG-151/20s, and two MK-108s!
The last evolved version of the Bf-109 that Messerschmitt tried to build was the "Me-209-II", which confusingly had nothing to do with the original Me-209 racer.
