Not to be confused with the first Me-209 (the 1939 Messerschmitt design to set the world speed record) the subject of this kit is the Me-109 II, otherwise known as the Me-209 V5.
The Me-209 V5 was the Messerschmitt attempt to fill the same void that the Fw-190 D9 / Ta-152 were destined to fill, while trying to retain about 60% commonality in parts with the Me-109G series aircraft then in production.
Needles to say, this is an interesting looking aircraft, and a prime example of armaments mismanagement and indecision thankfully common in the Third Reich.

 [3.0] Bf-109 Follow-Ons / Foreign Users / Variant Summary
MESSERSCHMITT BF 109 by Robert Grinsell, from THE GREAT BOOK OF WORLD WAR II AIRPLANES, Bonanza Books, 1984.
Messerschmitt did complete one more aircraft in the series, the "Me-309V4", which was the prototype for the proposed "Me-309A-2" heavy fighter, with an armament of no less than four MG-131s, two MG-151/20s, and two MK-108s!
Messerschmitt finally cut his losses and gave up on the idea.

The Messerschmitt Me-262 Schwalbe / Sturmvogel
* World War II saw the introduction of jet aircraft, and one of the most prominent jets of the conflict was the "Messerschmitt Me-262", a twin-jet fighter of advanced design.
Messerschmitt was straining to keep up with demands for production of existing aircraft types, a difficulty compounded by a devastating Allied air raid on the company's plant at Regensburg on 17 August 1943.
Messerschmitt answered without hesitation that the Me-262 had been designed from the outset to carry 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of bombs, could possibly carry twice as much, and would be easy to adapt to the "Jabo" role.

 Supermarine Spitfire - Great Britain
The speed of the Spitfire I was marginally higher than that of its principal opponent the Luftwaffes Messerschmitt Bf 109E and it was infinitely more maneuverable than the German fighter although the Bf 109E could out climb and out dive the British fighter and its shell-firing cannon had a longer range than the Spitfire's machine-guns.
In 1941 the Merlin 45 series of two-stage single-speed engines was adopted and the Type 349 Spitfire V so powered followed the Mark II into production and service.
of amour protection but this variant was otherwise similar to the Spitfire I. Deliveries of the Spitfire Mk IIs began in 1940 following the Mark I production lines and became the first major production variant to be delivered from Castle Bromwich.

Willy Messerschmitt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Probably Messerschmitt's single most important design was the Messerschmitt Bf 109, designed in 1934 with the collaboraton of Walter Rethel and which became the most important fighter in the Luftwaffe as Germany re-armed prior to World War II.
Following World War II, Messerschmitt was tried by a denazification court, and in 1948 was convicted of being a "fellow traveller".
The Me 210 turned out to be plagued by massive development problems that were only solved by evolving the type into the Messerschmitt Me 410, and the resulting problems and delays again put the reputation of both Messerschmitt and his namesake company in jeopardy.

The Me 209 was intended from the outset as a record breaker but the basic fuselage was used in the otherwise totally different Me 209 V4 in the effort to build a Bf 109 successor.
Nevertheless, the record stood for just over 30 years, but although attempts were made by the Messerschmitt company to develop a new fighter based on the ME-209 design, Me 209A prototypes flying later in the war, the programme was abandoned.
