Messerschmitt Me 210 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Messerschmitt Me 210 was a heavy fighter designed before the start of World War II to replace the Bf 110 in that role.
The first examples of the Me 210 were ready in 1939 but they proved to have terrible handling, and remedying the problem took so long that everyone involved tried to distance themselves from the project.
Messerschmitt sent in their modifed 110 as the Me 210, and Arado responded with their all-new Arado Ar 240.

Willy Messerschmitt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Me 210 turned out to be plagued by massive development problems that were only solved by evolving the type into the Messerschmitt Me 410, and the resulting problems and delays again put the reputation of both Messerschmitt and his namesake company in jeopardy.
Messerschmitt's design philosophy also is evident in his arguments with Alexander Lippisch, who was designing the tailless Me 163 rocket fighter for production at the Messerschmitt works.
Messerschmitt was appointed an Honorary Professor by the Munich Technical College in 1930, and the Vice-President of the Deutsche Akademie für Luftfahrtforschnung (German Academy of Aeronautical Research).

Messerschmitt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Messerschmitt is a famous German aircraft manufacturer, known primarily for its World War II fighter aircraft, notably the Bf 109 and Me 262.
Messerschmitt AG was incorporated as a separate company on July 11, 1938, with Willy Messerschmitt as chairman and managing director.
Messerschmitt had its share of poor designs as well; the Me 210, designed as a follow-on to the 110, was a disaster that almost led to the forced dissolution of the company.

The infamous Me 210 began its life in early 1938 with a design study for a potential successor to the Bf 110, which was itself not yet even in service.
In comparison to the Bf 110, the nose of the Me 210 was relatively short, stubby, and compact.
The Me 210B was a specialized high-speed reconnaissance version in which forward-firing armament was reduced to two MG 151 cannon and cameras were installed in the bomb bay.

The original design of the Me 210 was born in late 1937 to overcome to some shortcomings of the Bf 110.
Messerschmitt had supplied jigs and tools, and a new factory had been built for production when the German decision to stop its own Me 210 program was made.
A very important innovation in the Me 210 design was the use of side rear firing 13 mm (0.51 in) MG 131 turret guns (barbettes) controlled by the rear crew member by the means of a Revi gun sight and a pistol grip with the firing trigger.

Proposed to the German air ministry in late 1937 as a more powerful and more versatile successor of the Messerschmitt Bf 110, the Me 210 seemed on papar a very promising and extremely useful aircraft.

Messerschmitt developed the first operational jet fighter, the Me 262, proving to be significantly faster than conventional propeller-driven aircraft.
The Me 262 could simply fly away from defending fighters, or, in the hands of a more competent pilot, it could run down opposing fighters so quickly that opponents simply didn't have time to get out of the way of its guns.
A chain of radar stations was established all across the Reich territory from Norway to the border with Switzerland known as the "Kammhuber Line", named for Generalleutnant Josef Kammhuber, and nearby night fighter wings, Nachtjagdgeschwader (NJG), were alerted to the presence of the enemy.

Ironically, while the last Me 410 was being withdrawn from service by the end of 1944, the Bf 110 soldiered on in considerable numbers as a night fighter until the last days of the war.
The standard Me 410 scheme is applied - segmented 74/75 on the upper surfaces (including segmented camouflage on the fuselage spine) and a heavy, indistinct mottle of 02, 74 and 75 on the fuselage sides.

The Me 265, along with the Me 329 project which evolved from the P.04 project, were developed for comparison with the Me 410.
The fuselage front was taken from the Me 210, and the lower tail was bulged downwards to keep the propellers from striking the ground on takeoff.

The Me 210 was the result of a call to Messerschmitt to create a successor to the popular and effective Bf 110 long range fighter and bomber destroyer.
Plans for the Me 210 to replace the Bf 110 were all but abandoned by late 1941 when the Me 210 was still pronounced to be totally unsuitable for operational units.
With the 210's stability issue improved, the Me 410 was a solid performer, and through many variants, gave the Luftwaffe a formidable heavy bomber interceptor, and ground attack platform.
