One of these reworked designs was for the Me 509; another was for the 609, which was basically two Me 309 fuselages joined with a new center wing section.

The Messerschmitt Me 309 was proposed as an advanced replacement for the venerable Bf 109 fighter.
This was heightened by the trouble-plagued Me 309 prototypes, and also by the fact that the Me 309 was only marginally faster then the Bf 109G, and maneouverability and stability were actually poorer.

The Daimler Benz 605B 12-cylinder engine was buried in the fuselage behind the cockpit, and drove a three-bladed, Me P 6 reversible-pitch propeller by an extension shaft which passed beneath the cockpit (similar to the US Bell P-39).
Other Me 309 components were to be used, such as the tricycle landing gear, and the vertical tail assembly was similar to the one used for the Me 309 V1.
Although there were advantages of better cockpit visibility and relocation of the engine weight from the nose gear (important, since the Me 309's nose gear often collapsed), the Me 509 design and development was stopped when the Me 309 program was ended in mid-1943.

The 309 was a heavy fighter, in the the category of the P-47 wich flew in June 1942, the firt prototipe was equiped with a DB-603a-1 de 44 liters and 1750hp, then in a weird regretion, the oters 4 aircraft flew with the DB-605 1475 hp, wich deteriorated the performances very much.
IMHO the Me 262 is the most overrate plane of WW two.
