Messerschmitt Me 321 - transport glider
On the other hand Messerschmitt's Me 321 was a most successful design of braced high-wing configuration and with construction of welded steel tube, wood and fabric.
The later Me 321B-1 had a crew of three and defensive armament of four 7.9mm MG 15 machine-guns.
Me 321 (some 200 built) were towed usually by a trio of Bf 110C or by the unusual five-engined Heinkel He 111Z.

Messerschmitt AG, later Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) was a famous German aircraft manufacturer, known primarily for its World War II fighter aircraft, notably the Bf 109 and Me 262.
From this point on Messerschmitt became a favourite of the Nazi party, as much for his designs as his political abilities and the factory location in southern Germany away from the "clumping" of aviation firms on the northern coast.
Messerschmitt had its share of poor designs as well; the Me 210, designed as a follow-on to the 110, was a disaster that almost led to the forced dissolution of the company.

  Second World War Books Review
As early as October 1940 aircraft designer Willy Messerschmitt proposed to Ernst Udet, Chief of Air Armaments, that the Luftwaffe should procure "tank-carrying gliders." The first technical proposal for such a plane was produced in November of the same year and was eventually designated the Me 321 Gigant.
Towing the Me 321 was a dicey proposition, and Dabrowski notes a number of accidents involving towplanes.
Unlike the unpowered Me 321 which needed hazardous, specialized towing, the Me 323 with its six engines was a major step forward in the field of air transport.

Me 321 Gigant massive cargo glider
Such was the fantastic sense of urgency imparted by the RLM that both manufacturers had to establish special design bureaus solely for the development of their respective gliders, the Messerschmitt bureau under the leadership of Oberingenieur Josef Frohlich being established at Leipheim and dubbed Warschau-Sud, and the Junkers bureau being formed at Merseburg as Warschau-Ost.
In December 1940, the RLM had decided to change the designation of the Messerschniitt glider from Me 263 to Me 321, and thus it was as the Me 321 V1 that the first Gigant began its test program at Leipheim.
The crew of the Me 321B-1 was increased from five to six members by the addition of a co-pilot, the other personnel comprising a radio operator, a loading officer and two gunners.

As the Me 323D had a reduced number of cabin windows compared to earlier versions (or so I have read), it might not be correct to use the same basic fuselage and windows for both aircraft.

 Willi Messerschmitt
The "Me 262" was ready to go into prduction in 1942, but it was canceled then, because the RLM thought, that the war would be won by piston engined planes.
Messerschmitt and his engineers managed to get the plane suitable for front service, but the "Me 210" again was redesigned and renamed in 1943.
Willi Messerschmitt didn´t participate either in the construction of "Me 321", nor it´s redesign to the six engined cargoplane "Me 323" in 1942.

 Cybermodeler Online - Monogram 1/48 He 111H
Most remarkable of all the H variants was undoubtedly the bizarre He 111Z (for Zwilling, Twin), created by “marrying” two standard He 111H-6’s or H-16’s by connecting them with a new wing center section which mounted a fifth Jumo engine.
This strange improvisation came about through the need to develop a towing aircraft large enough to be compatible with the large Messerschmitt Me 321 “Gigant” troop carrying glider.
The He 111Z was evolved during 1941-42 and carried a crew of 9, piloted from the port fuselage, it performed its task surprisingly well, but its role disappeared when the Me 323 self-powered version of the Gigant replaced the Me 321.

 He111 at Frederick 2000
Since it was one of the losing combatants during the war, it's very rare nowadays to see any German aircraft flying at airshows, though there are a few, such as Messerschmitt Bf109E and Bf109G fighters and a couple of examples of the Mitsubishi Zero fighter in more or less original condition.
Other versions were used as torpedo bombers or as a carrier for early radio-controlled smart bombs like the Fritz X and the rocket propelled Hs 293 anti-shipping missile.
Perhaps the most extraordinary variant was the He 111Z "Zwilling" which consisted of two He 111s joined wingtip to wingtip, with a fifth engine mounted in the middle; this type was used to tow the giant Messerschmitt Me 321 glider.
