The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse ("Hornet") was a Luftwaffe heavy fighter and Schnellbomber of World War II developed from the badly flawed Me 210.
Although the Me 210 entered service in mid-1941, it was eventually withdrawn in favour of a further development, between it and the Me 410, which did not enter service until early 1943; there were insufficient aircraft to fully replace the Bf 110 in that role and it fought until the end of the war.
With the failure of the Messerschmitt Me 210 series, and a shortage of Ju 88 airframes, the Luftwaffe was forced to retain the Bf 110 in front-live service primarily as a night-fighter, and in 1942 the Daimler Benz DB 605B-1 engine was installed to produce the Bf 110G series.

 Messerschmitt Me 410
The basis of the Me 410 was the same as the 210, but with all of the improvements implemented to that aircraft during its troubled history (a longer fuselage and wing slats being the most significant).
The Me 410 was a significant improvement on the earlier aircraft.
Part of the reason for the success of the Me 410 as a night bomber was that the RAF had not been expected the attacks and had been concentrating on operations over Germany and occupied Europe.

The Messerschmitt Me 210 was a heavy fighter designed before the start of World War II to replace the Bf 110[?] in that role.
Messerschmitt designers had started working on an upgrade to the 110 in 1937, before the production version had even flown.
Their resulting Me 210 was a straightforward cleanup of the 110 and used many of the same parts.

There were high hopes for the Me 329, and although a wooden mockup was built to check the placement of various components, production was not pursued due to the long development time for such a novel design.
Plus, the Messerschmitt Me 410 was proving to be a success in many different roles with the upgrade additions from the Me 210.

Messerschmitt AG was incorporated as a separate company on July 11 1938, with Willy Messerschmitt as chairman and managing director.
Messerschmitt had its share of poor designs as well; the Me 210, designed as a follow-on to the 110, was a disaster that almost led to the forced dissolution of the company.

Messerschmitt Me 410B by Emanuele Pravata (Revell 1/48)
The history of the Messerschmitt Me 410 began with the disappointing performance of its predecessor, the Me 210, which had itself the ambitious task to replace the Bf 110, the first of the Zerstörers (Destroyers) dynasty.
The Me 410 was essentially a corrected Me 210 with 1m lengthened fuselage, automatic wing slats and new engines; the Me 410-B series were introduced in the early 1944 and were equipped with more powerful 1.900hp DB603G engines and specific armament.
I’ve always found the Me 410 to be a beautiful and interesting warbird, despite its tormented development and career: its curious blunt nose, its complex greenhouse and cockpit, the very high technology equipment and fire power made it one of the most fascinating WWII aircraft.

The Me 210 suffered from fatal instability and a tendency to spin at the slightest provocation.
These alterations were largely successful in that the Me 410 was no longer more dangerous to the aircraft than enemy pilots; but it was still generally unsuited to any role for which it was designed.

Plans for the Me 210 to replace the Bf 110 were all but abandoned by late 1941 when the Me 210 was still pronounced to be totally unsuitable for operational units.
With the 210's stability issue improved, the Me 410 was a solid performer, and through many variants, gave the Luftwaffe a formidable heavy bomber interceptor, and ground attack platform.
While the Me 410 scored a considerable amount of daytime bomber kills, it was still vulnerable to the latest single-engine Allied fighters.
