Oratorio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oratorio closely mirrored opera in all ages in musical style and form, except that choruses were more prominent in oratorio than in opera.
Most oratorios from the common practice period to the present day have biblical themes, but a number of composers, notably George Frideric Handel, wrote secular oratorios based on themes from Greek and Roman mythology.
Whether religious or secular, the theme of an oratorio is meant to be weighty, and can include such topics as the creation of the world, the life of Jesus, or the career of a classical hero or biblical prophet.

 Georg Frideric Handel
After a joumey to Dublin in 1741-2, where Messiah had its premiere (in aid of charities), he put opera behind him and for most of the remainder of his life gave oratorio performances, mostly at the new Covent Garden theatre, usually at or close to the Lent season.
The wide range of expression at his command is shown not only in the operas, with their rich and varied arias, but also in the form he created, the English oratorio, where it is applied to the fates of nations as well as individuals.
But above all he had a resource and originality of invention, to be seen in the extraordinary variety of music in the op.6 concertos, for example, in which melodic beauty, boldness and humour all play a part, that place him and J.S. Bach as the supreme masters of the Baroque era in music.

Picking no quarrel with the layout of the oratorio, Newton commends its arrangement as judicious, its passages as well-connected and its scope so comprehensive as to contain "all the principal truths of the gospel." Indeed, he summarises its main topics in a characteristically evangelical way.
During the course of his exposition Newton expresses his desire that his hearers' meditations on the Messiah would leave them with well-grounded hopes of meeting again soon around that self same throne, there to join the angels and the rest of the redeemed in singing the praise of God and the Lamb.
