First, the prophecy itself must be examined in its historical context in order to verify that the author did indeed intend it to be a Messianic prophecy.

In Mark 4:33-34, Mark pointed out that Jesus spoke to his disciples as they were able to learn, and in public he did not speak to them without a parable, and when they were alone, he explained his parables to the apostles and disciples. /gazette/2001/may/page7.htm   (1524 words)

An Explanation of Prophecies Cited by Christians
With the rise of Messianic Judaism in its various forms, many Christians have asserted that the ancient rabbis all took Isaiah 53 to be Messianic and that this opinion was not changed until Rashi popularized it several centuries after the time of Jesus.
At this the Jew said that these prophecies referred to the whole people as though of a single individual, since they were scattered in the dispersion and smitten, that as a result of the scattering of the Jews among the other nations many might become proselytes.

A Ready Defense - Messianic prophecies fulfilled in Jesus
In the Old Testament there are sixty major messianic prophecies and approximately 270 ramifications that were fulfilled in one person, Jesus Christ.
This means that the fulfillment of these eight prophecies alone proves that God inspired the writing of those prophecies to a definiteness which lacks only one chance in 1017 of being absolute.
Stoner says that by using the modern science of probability in reference to just eight prophecies, "we find that the chance that any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 1017."
