  Multiwavelength Messier 17
Messier 17 is a diffuse emission nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius, and is known by a variety of other names, including the Omega Nebula.
Nevertheless, it is possible to see that star formation is concentrated in an asymmetric region in the southwestern portion of Messier 17.
The modest peak seen near the image center could be due to weak emission from the gas within the Omega Nebula, or it could originate from an un-cataloged background quasar.

Universe Today - High Mass Stars Form From Discs Too
Messier 17 or M 17, is one of the most prominent star forming regions in our Galaxy.
M 17 is extremely young - in astronomical terms - as witnessed by the presence of a cluster of high-mass stars that ionise the surrounding hydrogen gas and create a so-called H II region.
From these observations, adopting standard values for the abundance ratio between the different isotopic carbon monoxide molecules (12CO and 13CO) and for the conversion factor to derive molecular hydrogen densities from the mesured CO intensities, the astronomers were also able to derive a conservative lower limit for the disc mass of 110 solar masses.

PITTSBURGH -- New York Rangers captain Mark Messier was ejected in the second period of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins after being assessed a match penalty for spearing.
With the Rangers trailing 2-1 and on the power play, Messier speared Penguins defenseman Martin Strbak in front of the Pittsburgh net at 6:13 of the second period.
Messier, also given an automatic game misconduct, cannot return to the New York lineup until a hearing is held on the penalty, according to league policy.

Messier was interested in finding comets, and this list catalogs objects that proved not to be comets.
Due to Messier recording it at a location 4 degrees away, it was considered "missing" for long time until his descriptions were paired up with the object NGC2548.
Messier discovered M88 in 1781, and described it merely as a "nebula without a star".

Although it is the farthest of all the Messier globular clusters at a distance of nearly 70 000 light years, M 54 shows up as a blazing light with a large compressed core and wide outer hazy halo with no stars resolved.

Messier, who was born in 1730 and died in 1817, had a love for finding comets.
Messier decided to publish his findings so other astronomers wouldn't have to go through what he did when looking for comets.
He started out with some 45 objects, and they came to be called "The Messier Objects." It was odd that Messier would later become more famous for his Messier Objects than for his comet findings.

Appendix C: Appendix C is for reference purposes, listing all 110 of the Messier objects at the times when they are best observed, and in constellation sequence.

Also, Appendix C lists all of the Messier objects in the exact same order as the Astronomical League's Observe manual "Observe: A Guide to the Messier Objects", in case you are using that as an observing aide.

Shadow of a large disc casts new light on the formation of high mass stars

Dieter Nuernberger, member of the team, sees this as a confirmation: "Our 13CO data obtained with IRAM indicate that the disc/envelope system slowly rotates with its north-western part approaching the observer."
