Messier object - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Messier objects are a set of astronomical objects catalogued by Charles Messier in his catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters first published in 1774.
The original motivation behind the catalogue was that Messier was a comet hunter, and was frustrated by objects which resembled but were not comets.
Because all of the Messier objects are visible with binoculars or small telescopes (under favorable conditions), they are popular viewing objects for amateur astronomers.

Jeff Z. Klein’s biography of the Stanley Cup-winning NHL forward, simply titled Messier, offers an informative look into the life of a very private hockey star who became a legend in the north, a hero on Broadway and will be remembered as a dud on the west coast by Canucks fans.
Messier’s heart and his 30 playoff points would prove a major deciding factor in the championship.
Although neither Messier, nor his family would sit down with Klein for the book – it is their stated policy not to get involved with these types of biographies – the lack of direct input and recollection from the subject himself is possibly the title’s only major weakness.

Messier's description mentions "7 or 8 very small stars" but because these brightest members of the clusters are blue giants, the cluster shines with a luminosity equivalent to 160,000 of our suns.
Discovered by Messier himself in 1771, M46 has fainter stars than its neighbour, M47 but they are more dense, and the cluster is further enhanced by a beautiful little planetary nebula (lower left) - NGC 2438.
It is assumed that he made a mistake, and NGC 2548, which is four degrees south of where Messier described, is generally accepted to be M48.

In the night of July 29 to 30, 1764, I have discovered a cluster of six or seven very small stars which are below Gamma Cygni, and which one sees with an ordinary [non-achromatic] refractor of 3 feet and a half [FL] in the form of a nebula.
I have compared this cluster with the star Gamma, and I have determined its position in right ascension as 303d 54' 29", and its declination of 37d 11' 57" north.
Messier discovered this in 1764; and though his description of it is very fair, his declination is very much out: worked up for my epoch it would be north 37d 26' 15".
