Mark Messier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Game 3 of the 1984 Finals, for example, with his Edmonton Oilers trailing the mighty New York Islanders by a goal, Messier ignited a comeback by beating an opposing defenseman one-on-one and then burning the goalie with a wicked wristshot to the short side.
Messier was already known as a hockey superstar, but the birth of the Messier legend came in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals.
Messier's 67-point season as a 40-year old in 2000-01 was a mark better than any he established in his Vancouver years, and showed that he was still a solid player despite lacking a supporting cast.

 Charles Messier
Messier as loyal employee stated: "I was a loyal servant of M. Delisle, I lived with him in his house, and I conformed with his command." When Delisle finally announced the discovery on April 1, 1759, it was not believed by the other French astronomers (perhaps they took it as an April Fool's joke).
The Messier catalog was finally corrected by identifying at least 3 of the 4 missing objects, and brought into its current state by adding the late discoveries of Messier and Mechain, M104--M109, plus the non-cataloged discovery M110, only in the 20th century.
Messier was appointed as associate editor of the Connaissance des Temps in 1785, and hold this post for five years until 1790.

 Charles Messier's Original Catalog
Messier's catalog was an important milestone in the history of deepsky discovery.
Messier mistook this nebula for the Comet of 1779, on the 5th, 6th and 11th of May; on the 11th he recognized that this was not the Comet, but a nebula which was located on its path and in the same point [place] of the sky.'
Messier looked for it on the following October 5, and on October 18, compared it [i.e., its position] with the star 4 Capricorni, of sixth magnitude, according to Flamsteed: it seemed to M. Messier to be composed of nothing but very small [faint] stars, containing nebulosity: M. Méchain reported it as a nebula without stars.

My favorites for the early evening were the globular star clusters Messier 3 and Messier 5.
At low power, these look like hazy round areas of light, but with a higher power eyepiece, you can distinguish some of the individual stars around the edges of these clusters which are thought to contain half a million stars.

Messier Object 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
It is extremely rich in variable stars: According to B. Madore (in Hanes/Madore, Globular Clusters, 1978), 212 variables have been found, 186 periods determined, more than in every other globular cluster in our Milky Way galaxy (and thus the most ever observed); at least 170 RR Lyrae variables were discovered.
At that time it was the 67th deep sky object ever observed by human eyes (and apparatus), although at that time, it was only the 62nd known nebulous object, while five objects had been forgotten again, according to the sources and current knowledge of the present author (see the Deep Sky Object Discovery Table).
It was also apparently the discovery of this object which eventually caused Charles Messier to start a systematical search for these comet resembling objects, and not just catalog chance findings as in the previous cases M1 and M2, as is demonstrated by the fact that in 1764, he found and measured all the objects M3-M40.

 Messier 3
Discovered by Charles Messier on May 3, 1764.
It was discovered in 1764 by Messier, who described it as "a nebula without a star, brilliant and round:" his instrument must have been rather moderate not to resolve this object, and it is matter of regret, that the exertions of such a man were straitened to such means.
It was next pronounced to be a "mottled nebulosity;" but in 1784, Sir W. Herschel attacked it with his 20-foot reflector, and resolved it into a "beautiful cluster of stars, about 5' or 6' in diameter." By the gauging process, which he has fully described, he estimated its profundity to be of the 243rd order.
