Mark Messier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Messier was drafted in the 3rd Round, 48th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
Messier was already known as a hockey superstar, but the birth of the Messier legend came in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the rival New Jersey Devils.
Messier's 67-point season as a 40-year old in 2000-01 was a mark better than any he established in his Vancouver years, showing that he could still be a valuable presence, but the Rangers missed the playoffs.

 Charles Messier's Original Catalog
Messier's catalog was an important milestone in the history of deepsky discovery.
Messier mistook this nebula for the Comet of 1779, on the 5th, 6th and 11th of May; on the 11th he recognized that this was not the Comet, but a nebula which was located on its path and in the same point [place] of the sky.'
Messier looked for it on the following October 5, and on October 18, compared it [i.e., its position] with the star 4 Capricorni, of sixth magnitude, according to Flamsteed: it seemed to M. Messier to be composed of nothing but very small [faint] stars, containing nebulosity: M. Méchain reported it as a nebula without stars.

With the signing period for unrestricted free agents beginning Monday, there is little question that Mark Messier, the Rangers' 41-year-old captain, will be back for a 24th NHL season, several people close to Messier confirmed to The New York Times during the last week.
All that needs to be done is for Glen Sather, the Rangers' president and general manager, and the Messier family to agree on what could be the final one-year contract of Messier's career before the Rangers begin training camp Sept. 13.
Messier, who will be 42 on Jan. 18, appeared in 41 of the Rangers' 82 games last season -- the fewest of his career.

Believe it not the first globular cluster was "discovered" by Edmund Halley, of comet fame, in 1715 yet he was not able to distinguish the many thousands of stars which we know today comprise the cluster.
Halley himself noted that Messier 13 was visible as a fuzzy star to the naked eye (it is 6th magnitude if that attests to early sky conditions!).
Herschel suggested that Messier 13 perhaps had over 14,000 stars, and indeed this cluster contains well in excess of 35,000 stars to limiting magnitude 23, ALL of which are gravitationally bound together around a common orbital center.
