Even though Messier came from a poor family and had limited schooling he was hired at the age of 21 as a draftsman by Joseph-Nicholas de l'Isle, Astronomer to the French Navy.

Charles Messier was limited as a scientist but he was an astute observational astronomer who studied sunspots, eclipses and occultations in addition to discovering many comets and nebulous objects.

The initial color images of the Messier Objects were obtained with the 24-inch f/5 reflector at the Grasslands Observatory from 1998 to early 2000.
These images are gradually replacing the older AP7 images, because they have a larger field of view, and upgrades to the observatory have permitted longer exposures and better images.
Because the images have the same relative exposures for each object type and the same camera orientation and image size, they can be used to compare one Messier object with another.

The red "stars" just to the northeast of the brightest stars are filter glint artifacts, and the "fuzzy" bluish "stars" due north of these bright stars are array persistence ("ghost") artifacts.
The blue line indicates contamination due primarily to older giants in the foreground and background; the isochrone is solar age at 1 kpc distance with the same reddening.
A preliminary and approximate analysis of the 2MASS near-infrared color-color and color-magnitude diagrams show that the cluster is old, like Messier 67, with a pronounced "red clump" (see, e.g., Grocholski & Sarajedini 2002, AJ, 123, 1603) and ascending branch of red giant stars.

Within the borders of Auriga are at least 10 brighter galactic stars clusters of interest to amateur astronomers, all of which are visible in the widest range of telescope sizes, and certainly most even in binoculars.
Messier 36 is probably the most compact-looking of all the three, and is, indeed, the smallest in terms of observed area, at only 12' arc across....half the size of the other two.
Messier 38, in my opinion is "better than M36.....but not as spectacular as M37." As the northernmost of the three big galactic Auriga clusters, M38 is positioned slightly out of the thickest and most star-dense part of the Milky Way stretching through this constellation.
