The Beehive Cluster (also known as Praesepe, Messier 44 or NGC 2632) is an open cluster in the constellation Cancer.
The cluster was known to Aratus by 260 BC and Charles Messier included it in his catalogue of cometlike objects despite its obvious nature as a star cluster.
Messier 44's age is estimated at about 730 million years.

Messier 44 (M 44) is a galactic open star cluster (or simply 'open cluster') located near the heart of the constellation Cancer.
The two brighter stars flanking M 44 to the north and south, Gamma and Delta Cancri, were known to ancient mariners as Aselli (or ass's colts), which were seen to be gathered around the glimmering manger (the star cluster) on clear, moonless nights.
Visually, the open cluster M 44 spans nearly two degrees of sky; therefore, it is of an object to view with common telescopes due to their narrow fields of view.

Messier, 44, was a free agent and easily could have signed on for another season with his old Edmonton Oilers team, but spending time with his family with no hockey on the horizon made it much simpler to decide.
Hockey will go on without Messier, just as it did without his longtime teammate Wayne Gretzky, because that is simply the evolution of sports, but it is as clear as the huge trademark grin on Messier's face that it never will be the same.
Everything is epic when it happens in New York, and while Messier would have been recalled as one of the game's all-time legends if he never had left the province of Alberta, he achieved mythic status in that single season on the Manhattan stage.
