Messier's third-period hat trick on May 25, 1994, is the hockey equivalent of Jets quarterback Joe Namath's similar guarantee prior to Super Bowl III, Willis Reed's efforts in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, and even Babe Ruth's "called shot" in the 1932 World Series.

 Charles Messier (June 26, 1730 - April 12, 1817)
Charles Messier was born in Badonviller, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France (20 miles from Luneville), then part of the Principality of Salm, as the 10th of 12 children of Nicolas Messier (1682-1741) and Francoise b.
Messier's first job was copying a large map of China; for that purpose, large space was needed, which Delisle assigned him in a long, unheated hall in the Royal College; Delambre (1827) commented that this was just appropriate for a future observational astronomer.
The Messier catalog was finally corrected by identifying the 4 missing objects (or at least three of them), and brought into its current state by adding the late discoveries of Méchain, M104--M109, plus the uncataloged discovery M110, only in the 20th century.

Messier as loyal employee stated: "I was a loyal servant of M. Delisle, I lived with him in his house, and I conformed with his command." When Delisle finally announced the discovery on April 1, 1759, it was not believed by the other French astronomers (perhaps they took it as an April Fool's joke).
Messier's comet search led to a further success on January 7, 1785, when he discovered comet 1785 I Messier-Mechain, when it was about 6.5 magnitudes bright; this one was visible for about 5 weeks.
Messier was appointed as associate editor of the Connaissance des Temps in 1785, and hold this post for five years until 1790.

 The Messier Catalogue
One of the earliest catalogues of nebulous-appearing objects was prepared in 1781 by the French astronomer Charles Messier (1730-1817).
Messier was a comet hunter, and as an aid to himself and others in his field he placed on record 103 objects that might be mistaken for comets.
Because Messier's list contains some of the most conspicuous star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies in the sky, these objects are often referred to by their numbers in his catalog - for example M31, the great galaxy in Andromeda.

 Messier Object 6
Open cluster Messier 6 is described by Burnham as a "charming group whose arrangement suggests the outline of a butterfly with open wings."
Thus, Philippe Loys de Chéseaux independently rediscovered it in 1745-46, and was the first to recognize it as "a very fine star cluster." Abbe Lacaille included it in his catalog of 1751-52 as Lac III.12, and Charles Messier eventually cataloged it on May 23, 1764.
Of all Messier objects, M6 is situated at the closest angular distance from the Galactic Center, which is located in the constellation Sagittarius but very near to the 3-constellation edge of Sagittarius, Scorpius and Ophiuchus.

We had spent the previous few weeks heatedly debating the impact of aperture when performing a Messier marathon; based on the results, I think the conclusion is that it doesn't make much difference, and that nearly any instrument is suitable for viewing Messier objects.
Once the sky darkened, the rest of the early Messier objects were easy, and we had plenty of time to talk, share views of the same object through different instruments, and compare notes on finding objects.
Score: 102 Messier objects found, 8 objects missed (one in evening twilight, the rest in morning twilight); one hamburger galaxy; one world-class comet; lots of photographs (as yet unseen), one great night of observing and camaraderie, and no regrets about the objects missed in order to watch Hale-Bopp.
