  Messier Object 97
The Owl Nebula M97 is one of the fainter objects in Messier's catalog, discovered by Pierre Méchain on February 16, 1781.
In his description of this object, Charles Messier also mentions two other nebulous objects that he (and Méchain) have seen at about the same time, but which he had not added in his printed catalog version of 1781 (in the Connoissance des Temps for 1784).
As the description is obvious and he added positions by hand in his personal copy, as well as descriptions in his manuscript personal pre-print version, we now know that he had observed the objects M108 and M109.

Mark Messier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Messier was drafted in the 2nd round, 48th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
Messier was already known as a hockey superstar, but the birth of the Messier legend came in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the rival New Jersey Devils.
Messier's 67-point season as a 40-year old in 2000-01 was a mark better than any he established in his Vancouver years, showing that he could still be a valuable presence, but the Rangers missed the playoffs.

Messier 104, nicknamed the Sombrero Galaxy, is an unusual spiral galaxy with both a large central bulge and a prominent, dusky disk, which we see nearly edge-on.
Messier 104 was also the origin of several important historical discoveries: it was the first galaxy in which dust lanes were seen, and also the first in which rotation was detected.
Messier 88 is one of the more prominent spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, a large collection of galaxies seen in the direction of the constellations Virgo and Coma Bernices.

When Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings, Messier emerged as a leader for the Oilers scoring a career high in points and leading them to a Stanley Cup victory in 1990.
As the Oilers continued to dump salaries, Messier was traded to the New York Rangers for Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice, and Louie Debrusk.
Messier moved on to the Vancouver Canucks in 1997, a move that did not yield the desired results.

Messier led the Rangers last season with 36 goals, and his 84 points were second only to Gretzky's 97.

Messier fought off tears as he walked through the tunnel leading to the ice and he was then presented by the Rangers with a few gifts, including a captain's chair for a fishing boat and personalized rods.
Messier's uniform number was then raised to the rafters and Messier raised the Stanley Cup one last time on the red carpet on the ice.

As often for planetary nebulae, the Owl is significantly brighter visually (Machholz: 9.7 mag, Hynes: 9.9 mag) than photographically (about 12.0 mag), as most light is emitted in one green spectral line (see our Planetary Nebulae page).
The DSSM image of M97 reveals that in the background of this nebula, there are several small nebulous objects, most probably very distant galaxies, the brightest of these objects being superimposed by the brighter star above and slightly left of M97.

This galaxy in the LX 90 under very, very dark skies can be clearly made out to be pencil-shaped, and edge-on galaxy with a clearly-defined character in medium-high power; the ETX 125 shows it well, but lacks the aperture to clearly show the 7' arc length of this curious object.
