An estimated 65 percent of Messina's population is female, reflecting male migration to the larger labor center in Gauteng.
It is situated in the poorest region of the poorest province in South Africa, bordering poverty-stricken areas of Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique.

As the northernmost town in South Africa, Musina lies 2 000 km from Cape Town and only 16 km from Beit Bridge on the Limpopo River, the frontier between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The Messina (Transvaal) Development Company was thus established in January 1905 in order to mine the area and develop the township that had been established in 1904.
The name Messina was a corruption of the original Musina, and in 2002 the government of Limpopo province, formerly known as the Northern Province, decided to rename the town.

The following is a report of a trip that I made with a Bill and Sandra Watson to South Africa from 1-15 March, 1997.
We then journeyed south to a wet forest in an outlier of the Drakensberg Mountains, and finally visited a seasonally flooded wetland at Nylsvlei.
This northern portion of the park was much quieter than the south and we often felt as if we had the park to ourselves.

Petrol provision can be a problem in Zimbabwe (espcecially unleaded fuel), so fill your tank while still in South Africa.
