Over the years, the observation branches of the Met Office have followed an agreed set of rules to determine whether measurements of rainfall should be considered as originating from a new source or rainfall number when the conditions under which rainfall observations are made changes.
The accuracy requirements, which are met in most instances by the current synoptic network, are for speed to be measured within 1 knot or 10%, direction within 5 degrees and gust speeds within 10%.

The Met Office Hadley Centre recently produced the HadSLP1 dataset which replaces the Global Mean Sea Level Pressure (GMSLP) data sets, and is a unique combination of monthly globally-complete fields of land and sea pressure observations a 5 degree latitude-longitude grid from 1871 to 1998.
Data were originally produced by the Met office primarily to provide independent correlative data for instruments on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) and are generated using data from operational meteorological observations.
Wind profiler data is provided from three UK Met Office wind profiler instruments from the period of 1998 onwards.

The Meterological Office, the hub of the UK's weather forecasting, has opened a new supercomputing centre in Exeter as part of the celebrations of its 150th anniversary.
The Met has been running the NEC in tandem with the Crays for the last fortnight, but took the old machines offline on Friday.
The new machines allow three main changes in the weather modelling: more satellite observations can go into the model; data processing is faster, improving the quality of analysis of the atmosphere; and researchers are able to make more detailed use of information from observations about how the atmosphere has changed with time.

The Met Office said global temperatures were 0.57 degrees Celsius (1.03 Fahrenheit) higher than the long term average of about 15 degrees (59F) in the period from January to June.
