Meta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In organic chemistry, "meta" (along with "ortho" and "para") is used to distinguish the three types of isomer of disubstituted benzenes: it indicates that the substituents are at locants 1 and 3.
Meta (Greek: "about," "beyond"), is a common English prefix, used to indicate a concept which is an abstraction from another concept, used to analyze the latter.
For example "metaphysics" refers to things beyond physics, and "meta language" refers to a type of language or system which describes language.

Meta- - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The prefix is derived by back-formation from the Ancient Greek preposition and prefix meta- (μετά) which meant either "after" or "beside".
In epistemology, the prefix meta- is used to mean about (its own category).
The title was later understood to mean "(that which is) beyond physics", and meta- was thus re-analysed as meaning "beyond".

Here, "meta" is used as in mathematics (like in the term metamathematics) to refer to the fact that each of these abstracts a large class of jokes.
In this sense, the usage of the term "meta" is similar to that in meta-reference.
Here "meta" is used to describe the fact that the joke explicitly talks about other jokes, a usage similar to the word metadata (data about data).

How To Use HTML Meta Tags
The meta description tag allows you to influence the description of your page in the crawlers that support the tag (these are listed on the Search Engine Features page).
The meta keyword tag is also sometimes useful as a way to help your page come up for synonyms or unusual words that don't appear on the page itself.
Meta tags, for example, can tell a browser what "character set" to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content.
